The Case of Abigail Williams
How did Abigail play a major role in deceiving her town of people being witches and also include the fact is how she created a bandwagon of witchcraft in the small town of Salem but what would have caused these terminations to do these acts.. Abigail Williams, a ruthless, manipulative tactics might also be a result of her low social position. She does have it pretty bad. She's an orphan. She's an unmarried teenager. And worst of all for her (in the patriarchal Puritan society), she's female. The only person lower than her is probably the black slave Tituba. On top of all that, Elizabeth Proctor has been going around dropping hints that Abigail is sleazy, lowering Abby's social status even more. Also

You drank a charm to kill John Proctor's wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor!
Overall Abigail had little influence on other cases that people were prosecuted, but when it came to the Proctor family, she played a major role in what would happen to them in court. Next is Abigail a victim of her society? She has played the victim in trials, but she truly is not an affected victim tried for witchcraft or having witchcraft done to her. Abigail could be tried truly a victim of ‘adultery’ of John Proctor.
Now we can see if Abigail can be excluded from accusing people of witchcraft and spreading the witchcraft blame on other innocent people due to the ‘adultery’ that prospered between Abigail and John? In respective evidence, I promptly make the confirmation of the answer no for Abigail being excluded from the events that happened in Salem. In the play in act 3 Abigail soon started to see that the courts idea about witches is begging to change do she starts to pretend Mary is sending out her spirit towards her and other girls to bring back the fear factor within the group.
Now going to the very start where the evidence below shows what Abigail motives comes into play about why should have tried Elizabeth Proctor in
Abigail is one of the many reasons that Salem undergo so many witch trials. However, is she really the one to blame? I believe that John Proctor had something to do with the witch hunt as well because of his affair with abigail, he knew the truth, and his guilt overpowering his being.
Abigail also has the ability to set fear in the hearts of anyone in the town that has wronged her in some way. In the eyes of Abigail, Elizabeth Proctor has wronged her in many ways, and Elizabeth knows that Abigail feels this way and that she will come after her eventually: “She wants me dead. . . She will cry me out until they take me!” (Miller 1274). Abigail has the power to ruin peoples lives if they do something that she doesn’t like, and the entire town knows it too.
Adultery. Abigail Williams is the young niece of Salem's Minister, Reverend Parris, she also was once John Proctor's housemaid until his wife, Elizabeth, put her out because of the affair. Abigial was just a young girl, she felt as if her feelings for John Proctor were ‘true love’, this drove her to do some of the most unspeakable things. She was seeking vengeance on Elizabeth since she put her out on the street, “blackened her name throughout the town” and she had the man she loved. Abigail's best way of getting things done was through manipulation, which she was best at. She voluntarily used witchcraft to ‘curse’ Elizabeth and yet turned witchcraft accusations against everyone of Salem. “I will come to you in the black of the night and will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you”(19), is one threat Abigail used to keep the girls mouth shut. She was a power hungry girl who did anything to keep the power for her own selfish gains. When she realized she was losing her power she claims “I have been near to murdered every day because I done my duty pointing out the Devil’s people- and this is my reward? To be mistrusted, denied, question like a -”(100) this was her way out of the truth. This shows Abigail's true
Abigail Williams was the person who was most responsible for the chaotic witchcraft situation in Salem. Abigail has an endless gift of dissembling. Abigail believes that by concealing, lying, and not speaking the truth she wouldn’t be whipped or executed. “Abigail: Please don’t hurt me! Mary Warren: I’m not hurtin’ her! Danforth: Why does she see this vision? Abigail: She see’s nothin’ Mary Warren: Abby you mustn’t! All The Girls: Abby you mustn’t!” (1149). There are no spirits there. They don’t see nothing. Abigail is just making a show for Danforth since they are all in the courtroom. Abigail is looking for someone to blame to make herself look
Abigail ruined a lot of people’s lives due to all the lies she made to the court. For instance, she was the one that blamed people of witchcraft so they were hung. More specifically, when she had an affair with John Proctor, they had Elizabeth go to the court to answer some questions about the affair, which Elizabeth lied about. If she would have just told the truth they might have gotten off death row. Also Abigail had tons of girls on her side making sure it was believable to the court that Abigail was innocent.
. .”). The declaration of him having what would be monumental information caused his national popularity and recognition to soar faster than ever seen by any other politician before and helped to begin the period in the US known as McCarthyism. Mirroring this is the plan of Abigail to more or less overthrow and jail the wife of the man she committed an affair with, John Proctor. Elizabeth Proctor, the wife in question, expresses this concern to John by saying “Spoke or silent, a promise is surely made. And she [Abigail] may dote on it -- I am sure she does -- and thinks to kill me, then to take my place.”(Miller 58). She is quite obviously not alleging crimes against people she actually saw committing witchery in the woods but rather has ulterior motives. In this case, she believes that eliminating her competition is the best way to get to John. Abigail has a clear and concise precision in which she charges crimes against members of the community of Salem who she dislikes. Additionally, placing the blame on other members of Salem helps to remove Abigail from being accused of working with the devil. These accusations help to separate her from the situation allowing her to appear as the victim. The two people who were the main impetus behind the crazes in both cases possess much deeper motives than it may appear at first.
Throughout the play Abigail tries to show the other characters that she is not to blame for her mistakes. An example of her trying to blame other people is when she tells her uncle that he should go and deny the witchcraft accusations. By not denying the allegations herself and having someone else do it, shows that she has support from other townspeople. Elizabeth Proctor is a strong woman who is blamed for witchcraft because of Abigail's accusations. Abigail claims that Elizabeth is a liar and is bitter, but when the reader meets Elizabeth for the first time they realize it is just Abigail exaggerating.
Abigail’s main goal in the beginning is to eliminate Elizabeth Proctor in order for her to finally be with John Proctor. Abigail sets herself up in a position of power by first creating the threat of witchcraft in Salem. She then forces the girls to keep the hoax a secret, and begins finding ways to advance her strength and power in Salem by accusing lesser people, such as the town vagrant and Tituba, the family slave. By accusing the people who have little say in society or aren’t in positions to defend themselves, they are almost guaranteed to be charged and hung, giving Abigail more respect in her voice. As more and more people are charged and accused, Abigail’s power grows and her opinion nearly becomes law.
Abigail was, of course, the ring leader of the witch craft accusations in Salem. These false accusations were not without cause, however; Abigail made these accusations to try and protect her own reputation. Initially, Abigail is mainly conflicted about her name currently being darkened through the town. She angrily accuses Elizabeth Proctor of spreading lies about her in defense. However, Abigail is seen as a whore, and John Proctor causes the ultimate disrespect to her when he says, “You are pulling down Heaven and raising up a whore.” (Act II) Abigail’s yearn to retain a good name caused the deaths and punishment of many
Proctor refuses to 'break it' and said, '...it speaks deceit, and I am honest! But I'll plead no more!
Abigail is clearly a victim in her society. She has lied to Parris, Danforth and may other people in the salem town. She has blamed so many innocent people of witchcraft. She has committed adultery with Mr John Proctor and she is very jealous of Mr John Proctor's wife, Elizabeth Proctor. Everyone thought of Abigail as the sweet innocent little girl so no one wanted to jump to conclusions and think or say it was her. So she got away with a lot of things in salem.
As we continue to read throughout the book, we notice the true colors of certain characters such as Abigail Williams. Abigail is a very intelligent, persuasive, malicious young woman. She is one of the main characters in the novel and is the main reason witch craft started in Salem. At first Abigail portrayed a young, innocent girl, but once you found out what she was doing with John Proctor, you started to think otherwise. She betrayed her own friends just to protect herself. She stole from her uncle; therefore she can escape from the entire catastrophe she had created. The first reason Abigail Williams is to blame for the deaths of those during the
Abigail was being accused repeatedly of lying and making up all of the accusations which were of false nature. The many people who were hung because of her testimony was what would now hang over her head. When she was brought before Mary Warren her false tears and outcries of pain were all an act, but in her mind she was the only one who was correct in her dealings. Abigail was for unfathomable reasons a port of knowledge through which the judges and lawyers convicted and sent to death those who were accused. The awful girl was but of one mind. She wanted revenge and to be back to her “love”, John Proctor. Abigail tried and tried repeatedly to get her hands on John, she tried to get his wife hanged, and when she couldn’t have him she decided that no one else could. Abigail soon began to accuse John Proctor of the precise thing she was known for, witchcraft. Abigail had been in the woods when the young Mary Warren went mute from the shock of seeing Abigail drink chickens blood and curse Goody Proctor, all of these happenings had to do with Abigail Williams, and now she would have to suffer through her own crucible, to figure out how she was going to get out. And though Abigail did narrowly escape the major shackles of her crimes, the guilt and foreboding of being a treacherous liar found her rumored to be a young prostitute in Boston. Forever to be alone and used. That was Abigail’s crucible and punishment for all the problems and
First off, Abigail uses the trials to seek revenge, resulting in the wrongful deaths of many. Abigail commits many sins, including lust for John Proctor. Once she rises to power in the courtroom, she uses it to exact vengeance upon those who have done her wrong. Victims of her wrath include Elizabeth Proctor; who she calls a ¨a cold, sniveling woman, and you bend to her¨ during an argument with John Proctor and Mary Warren (Miller 23). After Mary Warren starts siding with John Proctor, Abigail goes so far as to accuse Mary of sending her spirit out in the courtroom to attack the other girls. Abigail can be seen using such accusations to inflict a twisted justice on her enemies. Actions as unjust as these
Abigail Williams struggles to show that she has a good reputation throughout The Crucible. On Pg 111, Danforth asks Abigail did you ever have a sexual relationship with John Proctor? “If I must answer that, I will leave and I will not come back again” (pg 111 Abigail). Everybody in Salem is starting to find out about Abigail and John, but when she is asked if it is true, she lies. It tarnishes her reputation because she is seen as a whore now. She doesn't want her name to be blackened in Salem. Once you have had sexual relationships with someone and your not married, it will be hard for Abigail to find someone else to love her because she has already been with someone else, so who would want to be with her? “ Now look you. All of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam’s dead sister’s. And that is all. And do not speak of the other things” (pg 20 Abigail). Abigail and the other girls, were dancing in the woods, getting naked and making charms. The girls knew it was wrong but they blamed it on witchcraft rather than taking a punishment for it. This destroyed Abigail's reputation because she did not tell the full truth on what happened in the forest, but instead, she blamed it on witchcraft. She also threatened the other girls to go along with her to not make her look bad. Abigail does not take ownership of her downfalls and like to place the blame elsewhere.
