Authors during the antebellum period took a personal interest in finding possible solutions to various social issues occurring in their lifetimes. One of the biggest issues writers sought to resolve was racial and slavery tensions between different social groups. Abolitionists and scholars used literature to address African Americans’ concerns and work within the public eye to better others lives. While authors like Ralph Emerson and Henry David Thoreau choose to describe a specific social issue and its’ association with nature, others as Walt Whitman explore explaining interconnectivity to answer the problem of racial relationships. Leaves of Grass does a great job of showing how body parts can be utilized to display the similarities between people. A clear and effective moment is when Whitman stated, “You settled your head athwart my hips and gently turned upon me, / and parted the shirt from my bosom-bone, and plunged your tongue to my barescript…” First concepts to note in the quote is Whitman's diction, he uses words like ‘gently’, ‘settled’, ‘plunged’ all of which implies a progress people undergo when pursuing an interaction with others. In the case of slavery in 1800s United States, frequent interactions occur between Caucasian citizens of different social groups and limiting communication between slaves and masters. For slaves and masters, a forceful sexual relationship would occur and cause biracial children to be the result of the affair. Biracial children were not largely accepted by their fellow African slaves, nor by their white family counterparts because society associated addressed mix-race kids as abominations. As a result, pure-blood African slaves strengthen their connections to one another through racial and color alignment. Even though shared the identity between the various working classes and races was not visibly apparent, the characteristics were established and integrated into daily life. Characteristics like working hard, respecting superior officers, and avoid challenging the current social order. Division amongst social groups may benefit the upper-class to remain their status, but diversity does not have to stop groups from treating each other with respect and understanding that they all have a similar identity. Frances Willard and Walt Whitman are two significant nineteenth century American figures. Although Willard and Whitman are famous for different reasons, they do have one characteristic in common: they have both been accused of being homosexuals. However, most people do not know this because it is not put in history textbooks or taught in the classroom, for good reason. Public school students should not learn about Willard and Whitman’s homosexuality through their textbooks and teachers because it does not affect the significance of what these two Americans had accomplished. Not only does it not affect their importance in United States history, but it also cannot be proven. Teaching public school students that Willard and Whitman were homosexuals would be disrespectful to the brave and inspiring acts they have made towards the history of America.
Langston Hughes was the leading voice of African American people in his time, speaking through his poetry to represent blacks. His Influence through his poems are seen widely not just by blacks but by those who enjoy poetry in other races and social classes. Hughes poems, Harlem, The Negro speaks of rivers, Theme for English B, and Negro are great examples of his output for the racial inequality between the blacks and whites. The relationship between whites and blacks are rooted in America's history for the good and the bad. Hughes poems bring the history at large and present them in a proud manner. The injustice that blacks face because of their history of once being in bondage is something they are constantly reminded and ridiculed for but must overcome and bring to light that the thoughts of slavery and inequality will be a lesson and something to remember for a different future where that kind of prejudice is not found so widely.
Authors have changed people and their views continually throughout time. Authors Zora Neal Hurston and Langston Hughes both drastically effected peoples’ views on African American people. Their most profound time was during the Harlem Renaissance, where they wrote several novels and poems about the lives of African Americans. These authors used their African American heritage and life experiences to compose these works about their communities and widen many peoples’ thoughts and actions towards the African American race. The timing of these authors’ stories, their very diverse lives, and their literature skills all helped them to accomplish their goal of change for their race and bring the races closer.

Langston Hughes was an African American poet, social activist, novelist, and playwright. His works are still studies, read, and, in terms of his poems and plays, performed. He is best known for being a leader of the Harlem Renaissance. Within his works, he depicted black America in manners that told the truth about the culture, music, and language of his people. Besides his many notable poems, plays, and novels, Hughes also wrote essays such as The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain which Hughes gives insight into the minds of middle-class and upper-class Negroes. Prior to reading this essay, I never heard of, nor did I know, Langston Hughes composed essays, much less an essay that outwardly depicts aspects of life that most are accustomed to and see nothing wrong with. The Negro and the Racial Mountain formulated this view that Langston Hughes was more than a poet who wrote about jazz music as he is depicted within grade school textbooks, but instead, a man who had a great passion for the African American race to develop a love for themselves and for non-African American audiences to begin to understand how the African American race can be strong and creative despite struggles that may be occur. However, Whitman’s methods had to be adopted over time to touch/bring attention to different social issues. Two authors who were able to branch off of Whitman’s works and ideas were Isadora Duncan and James Baldwin. By analyzing these two important characters of history, we will be able explore two different social issues in two different eras and how Duncan and Baldwin refined Whitman’s approach in order to make a statement in society. Although fearful of social scorn, there are several poems in Leaves of Grass that are more explicit in showing the homoerotic imagery, whereas there are several subtle – should I say “implicit” – images woven into the fabric of the book. It is not strange, then, that he created many different identities in order to remain safe. What Whitman faced in writing his poetry was the difficulty in describing and resonating manly and homosexual love. He was to find another voice of his, a rhetoric device, and his effort took two forms: simplified, and subverted word play.
In Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself”, the poet showcases his feelings of people and himself by using literary descriptors to convey his thoughts on these and various other subjects. In section 20, Whitman’s purpose is to showcase self-assuredness regardless of what the world tries to state otherwise by maintaining his resolute happiness in being himself.
