Abortion defies the word of God as it breaks the sixth commandment, which states to not kill. Clearly, abortion is a part of murder as it takes away the life of an innocent child. Abortion has been a controversial topic and fluctuated in-and-out of political discussions for decades, but has started to become a more popular debate topic as of late. People have debated between “Pro-Choice”, a woman’s right to choose, as well as “Pro-Life”, strictly anti-abortion, as well as the lawmakers part in recognizing the issue. A Harvard College newspaper printed an opinion-based article by Tanya Luhrmann for Abortion Rights Action Week called, The Pro-Choice Argument. The author claims that a powerful part of American life is the experience of being a mother, and that each side, “Pro-Choice” and “Pro-Life”, feels attacked from one another affecting the mother and child relationship.

In the Judith Jarvis Thomson article on “A Defense of Abortion”, there is a lot of arguments that she points out as to why abortion of a child is not entirely wrong. She gives examples and analogies as to what could happen in a case of a woman when she becomes pregnant and is ill, and an abortion is necessary. She gives the readers various points of view on the issue of abortion, and is not seeming to be persuasive to be for or against abortions. It seems as though she is letting the reader understand all angles of the issue and giving the reader a chance to judge for themselves on if abortion is right or wrong considering all factors on what is morally and immorally correct.

Abortion is a conversational act that no one can seem to agree upon the long going argument dates to 1973 when “US Supreme Court’s 7-2 decision on Roe v. Wade declared the procedure a "fundamental right" (procon.org). Across America, the topic of abortion is still something that is regarded as taboo to speak about. Even today where it is more commonly brought up, the stigma surrounding the medical procedure has not gone away. There’s a rift between those who are pro-life and pro-choice, and each group has their own reasoning why or why not abortion should or should not be criminalized. The controversy about abortion is mainly rooted in the pro-life group believing that a fetus has the same rights as a born child and the mother. This stems into our government as well, where we have staunch republicans and democrats arguing back and forth over abortion. This also includes people who are incredibly religious and believe that it would go against Gods wishes, as humans are made in his image. Those who are pro-choice believe safe, legal abortions are a right and should be a readily available option to any woman who chooses to have one, no matter the circumstance. Abortion should be an option and that it should be a woman’s right whether to get one, and that she should be the only one to make that decision, not the government. The topic of abortion and its legality is one that is strongly felt on both sides of the issue. This is one of the most heated arguments you can get into and if I am being fully honest I am a little nervous about publicizing my view point. But here is my research and arguments for whether abortion should be legal or not.

God tells us that all humans are created equal, including unborn babies, because they too are living humans. Society teaches us that the rights of the unborn are less important than the right of living people. Unborn babies have the same right to life as any living person. God has created humans for goodness and peace. When people go through an abortion, they are being violent, and are showing no goodness and love to God’s children.

An incredibly prevalent subject in the media today, abortion and a women’s right to choose has graced newsstands, social media platforms, and even the presidential debates. As such a controversial topic, abortion has a certain stigma attached to it. Viewed often as this “black and white” topic, many philosophy articles have been written about the grey area that seems to surround this argument, writing either for or against the topic. On January 22, 1973 the United States Supreme Court made a 7 - 2 decision to legalize abortion in most of the fifty states. Although abortion was not legal in the past it was being preformed on women since the fifteenth century all over the globe, but, most women did not survive the surgery. That is the biggest reason it was preformed in secret because it was taking so many lives. Thanks to modern day medicine and technology the success rate for women is nearly one hundred percent. Today, the decision that was made in 1973 has caused American citizens, mostly women, to debate wether abortion is considered murder or just a simple act of not wanting to bring an unwanted child

Defending abortion is always controversial. But, in some circumstances it can be justified. In the case of Clare Macwurter, her mental state questions if abortion is permissible. Judith Thomson’s article “A Defense of Abortion” argues analogies defending her reasoning for justifiable abortion.

When it comes to the topic of the abortion, most of us will readily agree that it’s a prolonging subject in our society. Governor Rick Perry and state senator Wendy Davis has opposing views of abortion in Texas. Governor Rick Perry on one point of view speaks of the unhealthy conditions of abortion clinics in Texas. In his argument, Rick Perry opposes the procedure used by these clinics, claiming the standards and conditions are not met to that of those of how an abortion clinic should be. Senator Wendy Davis, on the other hand, stresses on the trials and tribulations Texas women would have to face under this law. With the use of voices from women in Texas, she argues against this law. Voicing her opinion on, whether the passing of this law would restrict basic women rights.

I believe that it is a woman’s choice whether to keep her child or not. I don’t think that anyone should interfere with the choice of the provider of the baby. Abortion is a popular topic in the debate world, but I strongly believe it shouldn’t since at the end of the day the woman is liable for her child. In this article, an unknown writer wrote, “The fact that a fetus may or may not have a beating heart, developing neurological structures, identifiable digits, or any other human quality does not equate abortion to murder. All embryonic organisms resemble a developed version of said organism. Additionally, a fetus does not have the mature, necessary neuroanatomical system required to feel pain until 26 weeks gestation. Is abortion murder?  Murder is defined as "illegal killing with malice aforethought." Abortion fails this definition for two reasons. First, abortion is not illegal, and second, there is no evidence to suggest that expecting mothers feel malice towards their own flesh and blood.

Abortion is a battle of morality and for years, neither party has completely won this fight of righteousness. While anti-abortion group advocates for the fetus’s right, the pro-abortion group is mainly focused on the mother’s right. Although both parties have many plausible reasons, the argumentative focus on the fetus or the mother is not sufficed to draw the line between black and white. Depends on the circumstances, an objective vision of the matter is required to determine the relative factors. The ultimate obligation as a health care provider is to advocate for the patients and protect their health interest. Abortion has always been an incredibly controversial topic. It has been one of the most widely discussed issues in the American culture for decades. Abortion is a discussion of human interaction, in which emotions, ethics, and law all come together. In many cases, people on both sides of the argument have valid points and take moral positions. A pro-choice position would assert that the decision to terminate a pregnancy lies the mother and that the government has no right to interfere or step in and make that decision. On the other hand, the position of pro-life advocates argue that life begins at the moment of conception. They believe that because the embryo or fetus is a human life and that one has no moral right to abort it. This theory argues that this human has no power or say in the matter and is rendered helpless from advocating for itself. Although abortion is a morally and emotionally charged issues, it is ultimately protected under the 14th amendment. The most common reasons for abortion include but are not limited to, teen pregnancy, rape, and health issues.
