Can you imagine the pain that you would feel if you lost a child that was yours, has your characteristics, and was so close to you? Abortion is one of the most common medical procedures performed in the United States each year. About 1.2 million abortions are performed each year in the United States. Women decide to have abortions because they are either too young, unmarried, poor, or even over the age of 40. There was a law set in 1973 that legalized abortion but to this day, 20-30 million abortions are performed legally and another 10-20 million are performed illegally each year. The type of surgical abortion procedure used is based on the stage of pregnancy that the women is in. Aspiration Surgical Abortion is performed during the first 6 to 16 weeks gestation. The woman gets medication for the pain and possibly sedation during the procedure. When the cervix is dilated wide enough, a long plastic tube connected to a suction device is inserted into the uterus. That suctions out the fetus and the placenta. The procedure can cause prolong bleeding, blood clots, damage to the cervix and perforation of the uterus. Dilation and Evacuation procedure is performed after 16 weeks gestation. A shot will be given before the procedure to ensure fetal death has occurred. A long tube is then inserted to begin removing tissue of the baby. Using a curette, surgical instrument shaped like a spoon, it scrapes the lining of the cervix. Forceps may be used to remove larger parts of the babies body. A final suctioning will occur to make sure all the contents are completely removed. Risks of the procedure include damage to the cervix, infection and blood clots of the mother. The worst procedure is Dilation and Extraction, that procedure is used after 21 weeks gestation. Forceps are used to grasp and pull the legs, shoulders, and arms through the birth canal, and the baby is alive when the procedure starts. An incision is made at the base of the babies skull
