Abortion, which is defined as a deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, is one of the most controversial issues in society. Many people believe that abortion is unethical and morally wrong, while others believe that it is a woman’s right to decide what to do with her body. According to www.census.gov, “the number of abortions performed annually in the U.S. has leveled off at 1.2 million a year” (1). This statistic supports how many women are choosing abortion. Although abortion is legal in the United States, many people continue to voice their opinions on how it is a human rights violation and should be illegal everywhere. This, however, did not end the controversy. Abortion is when a woman chooses to terminate the life of her unborn fetus. In the United States there are two methods of abortion, the in-clinic and pill abortion (abortioncounsel.org 1). The abortion pill is called mifepristone, but is also referred to as RU-486, and is administered up to the first seven weeks of pregnancy (www.americanpregnancy.org 1). Also, there are two types of surgical procedures of abortion, which are known as manual vacuum aspiration and aspiration, both of which are done in the very early stages of pregnancy (www.americanpregnancy.org 1). Tamara L. Roleff states, “With an average of 1.5 million abortions performed every year since its legalization in 1973, abortion is the most common surgical procedure for women” (141). Also, Roleff indicates, “Almost 90 percent of the women who obtain abortions are in their first-trimester of pregnancy – less than 13 weeks pregnant,” which explains how quickly a woman usually makes her decision. These statistics alone have disturbed many people about the number of women that choose abortion with all of the risks, both mentally and physically, that come along with their decision.
