The appellation, “The Great Emancipator” is not granted to just any person, but rather it highlights a courageous, respectful, and driven individual. Abraham Lincoln’s contribution to the United States is so grand and captivating, that he is deservingly recognized as America’s greatest president. For example, he abolished slavery, led America through the Civil War, and prevented the Union from splitting apart. Abraham Lincoln is America’s greatest president and was the forceful leader that manipulated America from a state of turmoil into a state of justice and harmony.

Born in Bardstown, Kentucky, Abraham Lincoln taught himself how to be strong, stand for what he believed and wanted to make a difference. To most he was a hero for his victory in the US Civil War. Lincoln proved to be a strong military leader. He strategized and paved the way for slaves to be a part of history. At the young age of two, Abraham Lincoln was unaware he was getting accustomed to a lifestyle, that would later impact his career. Abraham Lincoln came from a very normal background. He spent most of his younger years close to nature. He favorited hunting, fishing, cropping, and his various boyhood escapes. Abraham Lincoln was born Sunday, February 12, 1809, in a log cabin near Hodgenville, He was the son of Thomas and Nancy and he was named for his paternal grandfather. Thomas Lincoln was a carpenter and farmer. Both of Abraham's parents were members of a Baptist congregation which had separated from another church due to opposition to slavery. As Abraham grew up, he loved to read and preferred learning to working in the fields. This led to a difficult relationship with his father who was just the opposite. Abraham was constantly borrowing books from the neighbors.

As any other person on this earth, everyone has a story that led them whom they are now or before they’ve become known/public. Lincoln’s childhood you would say wasn’t the worst or best childhood. Both his older sister and younger brother died at infancy. So Lincoln had no siblings he was an only child. The 1860’s was a difficult time for the United States of America as it was the time period where they went into the American Civil War. At a time of slavery and many conflicting ideas, the United States was falling apart and at its most divided time ever. As the elected president in 1861, Abraham Lincoln had to fix the issues that the country was facing. Some of those issues included slavery, the separation of the north and south, and the Civil War itself. Abe didn’t grow up as an only child. He had a brother named Thomas Lincoln Jr., and a sister named Sarah Lincoln. Sadly, Sarah died at the age of 18 giving birth to a baby that also died. Abraham had a dad and a mom. His mom’s name was Nancy Lincoln who died at 34 when she got milk sickness from a cow. His dad’s name was Thomas Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln moved three times. They first moved to a another log cabin in Kentucky that wasn’t that far from their old house. Abraham was only a toddler when his family packed their bags and moved. Then, they moved to Indiana in 1816 because Indiana was about to join the Union and become a state. Abraham Lincoln’s presidential career was full of questionable actions. Thomas DiLorenzo author of, The Real Lincoln discusses Lincoln’s actions regarding racism, his refusal to emancipate the slaves, his continual tendency to act independently of Congress, and his radical reconstruction after the Civil War. DiLorenzo attacks each of these topics in his book and proves that Lincoln had his own agenda, and was not the picture perfect president everybody thought that he was.

He grew up dirt poor and in my opinion could be considered a frontiers man just like his father was. His mother on the other hand passed away when Lincoln was at a very young age. Lincoln was also in my opinion of great intelligence, hard worker, and a very ambitious young man. He would farm and run a store in New Salem, Illinois (www.whitehouse.gov). A little less known tale about him is that he was a very good wrestler back in the day and received his nick name “honest Abe” for walking a library book several miles to be returned. He met the love of his life May Todd after becoming a dynamic lawyer and had four young boys. Sadly only one lived to see adult hood (www.history.com). Many Americans believed that the election of 1860 would decide the fate of the Union. The Democratic Party was the only party in the national scope. The convention in Charleston, South Carolina in 1860 split the Democratic Party. Stephen Douglas wanted his party’s presidential nomination, but he could not afford to alienate northern voters by accepting the southern position on the territories. However, "Southern Democrats insisted on recognition of their rights, as the Dred Scott decision had defined them and they moved to block Douglas’s nomination"( Bialy, 2007, p. 383). On April 14th, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln attended a play called Our American Cousin at the Ford Theatre in Washington, D.C. An actor by the name of John Wilkes Booth, snuck into the president’s booth and shot President Lincoln point blank in the head.

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States of America. He was elected into presidency on November 6, 1860. Many of the southern states were unsupportive of Lincoln becoming president because he had run on an anti-slavery platform. Lincoln being elected into presidency caused states such as South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas to split from the Union. In his inaugural address Lincoln proclaimed it was his duty to maintain the Union; a month later the Civil War began. Although Lincoln did many great things for our country, his vital role in the Civil War is what most likely lead to his assassination.

Abraham Lincoln is known as the sixteenth president of the United States. A self-taught lawyer by trade who was born in a one room cabin in Kentucky, he came from meek beginnings. Mr. Lincoln was only known to have a few years of formal schooling he had to work to help support his family. He moved to the capital of Illinois and practiced as a lawyer. This is where he earned his nick name of Honest Abe. He was known to help the common man. He met and married a woman named Mary Todd. They had four sons. One of which passed away with Typhoid fever. He was shot by John Wilkes Booth in Ford’s theater on April 14, 1865 and died the very from a gunshot to the head. He never lived to see the Union win the war with the plans he helped devise. He next day is known in history for his moving speeches. Two of the main speeches are the Gettysburg Address and the Emancipation Proclamation. Both of these are remembered today as turning points in history. Honest Abe was not only our president but a leader in that he felt like he needed to protect our constitution and the rights it afforded us but also protect the Union. He was a level headed man in a time of war and conflict. He was elected to office when the Union was in a state of unrest due to the issue of slavery. Several states succeeded when he was elected to office. This set up a series of events that lead to the beginning of the civil war. The steps that he took forever changed the history of the United States.

Lincoln officially voiced his opposition to slavery in the United States. In 1860 he officially nominated for the Presidency. The following year he took the vast majority of votes and became the first president of the Republican Party. In 1863, he stated precautions on measures and precautions needed to remove the slaughter. Later, when the Declaration of Liberation and the amendment of the thirteenth Law were declared, in June 1863, slavery was formally abolished from the United States.
