Abraham Lincoln is by far our most revered president in the history of the United States. He had a strong moral vision of where his country must go to preserve and enlarge the rights of all her people, but he was also a good man with a strong sense of character and a great discipline in the art of law; and he sought to continue the great and mighty legacy of the Constitution. He believed that the Founding Fathers had drawn up the Constitution without the mention of slavery because they felt that it would later die of a natural death. He would soon learn that that would not be the case.

Abraham Lincoln, Civil Rights Activist, U.S. Representative, U.S. President, and lawyer is regarded as one of America’s most successful presidents due to his incredible impact on the nation, and his views on slavery and civil rights. Abraham Lincoln, also referred to by Honest Abe, had one of the hardest jobs a president can have and that is being a war-time leader. Despite the odds, Lincoln persevered through his rough childhood and found his way into politics and later became one of America’s greatest and most respected presidents, because of all the countless sacrifices he made for our country.
There has been many great men and women in America that has been an influence in the United States of America who strived to make the United States a better country. One of the many people who has been and continues to be one of the great American influential people is the sixteenth president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln strove to do his duties to serve America during his presidency. He served our country during the time of conflict and kept our country from falling apart during the American Civil War. Also, Lincoln gave his life for what he believed in. Other people might believe that there are better American war heroes or technological advances in the United States; I personally believe Abraham Lincoln was one of the greatest because he changed America for the better through one of the toughest times of war for America, and he put his strong mind into ending slavery.
One of the great Presidents of the United States and a condemner of war, Abraham Lincoln, once said, “Military glory--that attractive rainbow, that rises in showers of blood--that serpent's eye, that charms to destroy.” Similarly, E.E. Cummings denounces war in his poems, after first hand experiences of battle in World War I. Although American society glamorizes war and the honor of sending a loved one to war, Cummings argues through his depictions of actual life on the battlefield, that this glamorization is not patriotic. People who push their children and friends into battle are not aware of and have no desire to be aware of the traumatizing experiences that the soldiers, whom they so proudly support, are facing. As exemplified through a unique writing style and the false rhetoric used by “patriots” who support war, Cummings suggests that the influence from a soldier’s home-front that pushes him to war is ironically anti-patriotic.
Out of Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington, I think Abraham Lincoln was the best out of the three.
In Larry Madaras and James M. SoRelle’s book Taking Sides: Clashing Views in U.S. History Volume 1: The Colonial Period to Reconstruction the topic as to whether or not Abraham Lincoln was America’s greatest president during and after the eighteenth century is explored and debated by Phillip Shaw Paludan and Melvin E. Bradford. Paludan believes Lincoln was America’s greatest president on the grounds that he freed the slaves and kept the Union while the Civil War was going on. Bradford on the other hand believes Lincoln abused his power while being in office and did not follow the goals the Founding Fathers had set in the eighteenth century. Though Lincoln may have gone about his presidency a different way than others had previous to him, he still proved to be a great leader during the Civil War and was in fact America’s greatest president.
