From being an exceptional wrestler to abolishing slavery, Abraham Lincoln is one of the most interesting and influential men in American History. Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12th, 1809 in a log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky. When he was ten years old his mother died of tremetol which is milk sickness, she was 34 years old at the time. This greatly affected Lincoln much of his younger life. After his father remarried, he quickly bonded with his stepmother, Sarah Johnston. She influence Lincoln to read more and his love of reading thrived. During the war, Lincoln led the north into a victory. Without this victory, the United States would not be United and slavery would still be a thing (or at least it would have been longer before either of those occurred). Lincoln influenced the war through his power as president but also through his many great speeches. Two notable speeches are “The Emancipation Proclamation” and “The Gettysburg Address”, the latter of which is said to be the most important speech in American history. It was given at the National Cemetery of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania. This speech moved many, and unified the north during difficult times. Lincoln says that, "...we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain--that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom--and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." One can easily observe these downfalls by focusing on his life up until he became president. Most of his life up until winning presidency is loss and defeat. He failed in business, he lost many political campaigns, he went bankrupt, he lost his job. Through all of this turmoil that Lincoln endured, he still kept his head up and worked towards his goals. Many people would have easily given up but Lincoln worked until he became president, and still continued to work hard. Personally, I think Abraham Lincoln is an astounding role model. I put him high on the list of greatest men to ever walk the earth. Lincoln has done such a tremendous amount of good for the United States that he should not be forgotten. Lincoln should remain in history books for centuries to come. If we as a society forget about Abraham Lincoln, we will have lost an exceptional example to follow and learn from. The Civil War marked a huge milestone in the history of our nation and the documents and speeches that were made around this time had a large impact on it all as well. One big speech that was given during that time was the Emancipation Proclamation. It was a speech that helped free the African American slaves of our country. President Lincoln gave the speech in the midst of the war. The Civil War was one of the biggest challenges that our nation faced. President Lincoln uses repetition and pathos to help convey his message about slavery.
Abraham Lincoln was one the best leaders and commanders this country has ever had. And that wasn’t just noticed by a few people, it was noticed by many. Frederick Douglass describes Lincoln in his “Oration in Memory of Abraham Lincoln” and being “swift, zealous, radical, and determined.” He ended his statement by saying “his memory will be precious forever” (Document K). Another quality that made Lincoln such a great leader was that he thought of the country as a whole before himself.
Abraham Lincoln had a massive effect on the war because of the Emancipation Proclamation. “The Emancipation had an immediate and profound effect on the course of the war” (1). Proposed in the summer of 1862 and established in January 1, 1863, the Proclamation established slaves in the South did not have to serve in the Confederacy. It also established African American people in the north to be able to serve in the Union. Nearly 200,000 African American citizens served in the Union. This gave the Union more leverage in the war to win. The Proclamation served as the pathway for the 13th amendment to emerge. If Abraham Lincoln did not sign the proclamation the Union might not have won the war, the country today would be separated into two different countries.

Lincoln stood on a platform in the midst of a battlefield in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and spoke these words: "...we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom” (Abraham Lincoln Quotes). In Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address in November of 1863, he explains that the soldiers, who fought so bravely in the Civil War, did not die without cause. Instead, they fought to change America for the better in multiple ways. There were many reasons for the war, but in the end, the unplanned realities that arose, would bring new challenges. However, the grieving families and surviving soldiers felt none of this bolstered morale and so the president not only aimed at addressing the tragic loss of the soldiers, but also remind the families and others in the Union that they had lost their lives for a greater good. He tells the citizens that they are not fighting solely to preserve the Union, but also to unite the nation and allow for greater freedom throughout the country. As a result of Lincoln's passionate final words and his declaration of the preservation of democracy in the country, the grieving families and disheartened common men were rejuvenated and rallied behind this new cause.

It is known that there are several factors that led the South to secede. Slavery, states’ rights, and the election of Abraham Lincoln, himself, to the presidency, contributed to the war and Lincoln recognized that and took responsibility and initiative to fix what he had started. Even though it has been nearly 150 years since the Civil War ended, some of the leftover divide between North and South can still be seen. In politics, there is a divide between North and South. However, there are also issues of race and cultural differences. Much like how the conservative states are in the North, and the Liberal states are in the south, but this is mostly because of the demographic of the area in which they are voting. Abraham Lincoln experienced a lot within his time of being president, which was set as his initiative to start his achievements and relationships. President, Abraham Lincoln is no doubt one of the most essential historic figures to be a part of the American history. He will be known for generations to come not only for being on the five-dollar bill, penny, and on Mount Rushmore, but what he stood for and pursued. The war which was fought on July 1863 was a unified victory which stopped General Robert E Lee from invading the North the second time. It was a three day battle which involved so many casualties. As a result of this war, Abraham Lincoln went to Gettysburg in order to dedicate Gettysburg National Cemetery to use to honor the soldiers who had fallen as a result of this war. His speech at the cemetery is what we now know as the Gettysburg address.
