They can be requested for medical or legal reasons. Example Lithium poisoning, Lithium monitoring. The age or gender of the people can influence the date and frequency with which an examination is required. Chronic or progressive conditions may require continuous monitoring by examination. When this test is used to monitor lithium treatment, the test is performed 12 hours after the last dose. This test should be done at least every 6 months after a patient has been stable on lithium. Lithium is well absorbed by all pathways so the oral route is preferred in clinical use. The most common salts in therapy are carbonate, citrate, acetate, sulfate and lithium glutamate. The most frequently used salt is lithium carbonate. Common lithium doses (25 mEquivalents / diaj can neutralize one-tenth of the amount of HCl produced daily and a much lower fraction of the maximum acid secretion capacity of the gastric mucosa. The absorption is practically complete at 8 hours of ingestion. Only 1% of the administered dose is not absorbed and eliminated by feces. As absorption is rapid and complete during the first few days of treatment, some undesirable side effects such as nausea, occasional vomiting, mild diarrhea, gastric discomfort and some muscle weakness may appear. In most cases these side effects disappear after several days or weeks of treatment. Peaks of maximum plasma concentration are reached after 1 to 3 hours with lithium citrate and then 2 to 4
