There are about 5.3 billion internet users, that is more than half the population. (Reportal 4) In the short story The Veldt by Ray Bradbury, the author predicts the future of Tech. More than 70 years ago, he predicted it would become an unnecessary dependency for future generations, as it has done today. Technology is destroying human communication by erasing the need for humans, causing mental health issues, and spreading misinformation. When technology becomes addictive, you lose control of yourself. For example, in the short story The Veldt by Ray Bradbury, the author warns about the future effects of abusing technology. In the article, Robinson demonstrates how while technology has many benefits, it has a plethora of downfalls. Social media is ruining our perception of the world, from people editing their photos to look better, to people lying about who they are. 97% of teenagers are on social media, and about 37% of social media users report feeling upset or having negative thoughts after using apps like Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter. Lawrence Robinson, the managing editor and author at HelpGuide.org states, “Ironically for a technology that’s designed to bring people closer together, spending too much time engaging with social media can make you feel more lonely and isolated—and exacerbate mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.” (Robinson 2). People interviewed many many different views on this topic, some saying it is ruining this generation's mental health, some saying it is saving the world. Many teens have been led to believe this is normal, since it has become widespread these days. Abbey Prosser, a 17-year-old from Jacksonville, Florida states “I didn’t realize it at the time, but it was making me more anxious and depressed. Those apps made me think everyone was out doing fun stuff all the time, and I felt left out. I didn’t like how seeing that stuff made me feel, but I wasn’t aware enough to know I should stop. I wish someone would have paid attention to how much time I was spending on my phone and how unhappy I was.” (Prosser 11) This portrays how when teens are experiencing depression or anxiety due to social media, they might not realize this because of how normalized this has become.
