In the article, LA Times, by Mari Pearlman “Cheating in School Reflects Basic Confusion in Society” talks about how cheating is wrong. Pearlman explains how cheating in school can affect students later on in life. Many students cheat whether their in elementary, high school, or college, cheating is everywhere and everyone does it. Cheating is wrong in numerous ways and can result to bad habits in the future.

The word “cheat” can be defined as ‘“to act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage, especially in a game or examination” (Google). Although this may be the way in which cheating is known, numerous definitions exist of this sensitive word. They all mean something vastly different from one another, but all get at the same thing: cheating is lying in order to attain one’s deepest desires. Essentially, when we people this word, they think of something that’s very taboo in today’s society. In fact, every time the word “cheat” is employed, the automatic conclusion is made that someone’s feelings end up hurt. 99% of the time, this statement appears to true. The two most well-known scenarios of cheating are cheating in a relationship, and cheating in school events such as tests and sports events/games. The bottom line can be summed up like this: no matter how a certain individual may choose to define the word ‘cheating’, it raises eyebrows, and questions, about the moral values of today’s society and its citizens.

Cheating in the American culture can be so commonplace due to its availability. American citizens want whatever they can't have; cravings, desires, etc. Everyone has taken the elementary way at least once in their life. But even though it's accessible, cheating is wrong because it will not be beneficial to people in life. It always will be immoral and should not be accepted in society.

The moment when we cheat on someone or something that we loved will be one of the greatest regret in our life. Capelewicz’s ideas and facts really convince me of cheating was bad, and I felt bad for cheating in a competition in the past. Many students find it necessary to cheat on their assignment and/or tests to be successful in their education. I like to think that their theory is “The end, justifies the means.” However I do not personally believe this to be true. This theory does not make cheating right or ethical either. Sometimes, people like to stretch certain concepts to make it seem like they’re not really in the wrong. For this reason, I will tell you what cheating is and how it’s not really a stretchable term. Since we're talking about my thoughts, let's start with the impact your cheating has on me. Turning in someone else's work as if it is your own is a form of lying. To me, at least, when someone lies to me, it says, "You're either too stupid to recognize that I'm lying to you, or you're powerless to do anything about it even if you do know that I'm lying. Either way, I don't respect you." In my position as a professor, the "powerlessness" option translates into "too gutless or lazy to do anything about my lie." So, from my point of view, when a student lies to me, he or she is in effect saying that I'm stupid, gutless, and/or lazy.

Just think about how many people cheat. There are more and more everyday. In the article “Studies Found More Students Cheating, With High Achievers No Experption”. Cheating is getting worse everywhere more people are cheating in school and work.

Cheating in school is, while frowned upon, very common; especially in high school age students who have a lot riding on them to succeed. In a quote from Mari Pearlman’s LA Times article, “Cheating in School Reflects Basic Confusion in Society” she explains that teachers get upset with parents who proudly cheat on “income taxes, fooling a boss or supervisor, taking supplies from a workplace to use at home” but the same parents want teachers to discipline students who cheat. Students become confused as to what kind of cheating is right and wrong because their parents gloat about cheating in adulthood.

It is my opinion that from a very young age we all subconsciously know that cheating is wrong. As we grow and develop our subconscious can be influenced by many things, such as our environment and our peers, this can cause us to sway our beliefs and something that we once knew to be wrong can quickly become something we routinely practice to get ahead.

Cheating is defined in the dictionary as, to deceive by trickery; swindle, however the dictionary fails to tell you if it is right or wrong to cheat. People have many different beliefs when it comes to cheating; some think its fine to do while others completely disapprove. I intend to show the different beliefs, from different perspectives of people, and also intend on proving which beliefs have the strongest and weakest arguments.
