Emphasis on Integrity The world today is filled with cheating, regardless if you are discussing relationships, sports, academics or politics. We live in a society fueled by technology, where things can be erased and the evidence of cheating destroyed with the click of a button. I do whole heartedly believe this is the reason why cheating is so prominent in our current society. I personally believe that cheating is not acceptable, and never justified. Below are statements that support my opinion. Cheating is unfair to you. The feeling of accomplishment may feel absolutely wonderful. It builds confidence and self-esteem. You may make the winning touchdown, score an A+ on an assignment, or win a small political election, but deep down inside you will know that you did not really earn whatever it is you accomplished. Cheating raises stress levels. A study completed by Dr.Sarita and research scholar Rajni Dahiya concluded that educational anxiety increases the chance of cheating. Parents and school officials both cause this anxiety and stress, due to the pressure placed on the student to be a top achiever. The research study states that academic cheating happens across all levels of education, and begins among students at the age of 10-14. Cheating in the American culture can be so commonplace due to its availability. American citizens want whatever they can't have; cravings, desires, etc. Everyone has taken the elementary way at least once in their life. I like to think that their theory is “The end, justifies the means.” However I do not personally believe this to be true. This theory does not make cheating right or ethical either. Since we're talking about my thoughts, let's start with the impact your cheating has on me. Turning in someone else's work as if it is your own is a form of lying. To me, at least, when someone lies to me, it says, "You're either too stupid to recognize that I'm lying to you, or you're powerless to do anything about it even if you do know that I'm lying. Either way, I don't respect you." In my position as a professor, the "powerlessness" option translates into "too gutless or lazy to do anything about my lie." So, from my point of view, when a student lies to me, he or she is in effect saying that I'm stupid, gutless, and/or lazy.

Cheating in school is, while frowned upon, very common; especially in high school age students who have a lot riding on them to succeed. In a quote from Mari Pearlman’s LA Times article, “Cheating in School Reflects Basic Confusion in Society” she explains that teachers get upset with parents who proudly cheat on “income taxes, fooling a boss or supervisor, taking supplies from a workplace to use at home” but the same parents want teachers to discipline students who cheat. Students become confused as to what kind of cheating is right and wrong because their parents gloat about cheating in adulthood.
It is my opinion that from a very young age we all subconsciously know that cheating is wrong. As we grow and develop our subconscious can be influenced by many things, such as our environment and our peers, this can cause us to sway our beliefs and something that we once knew to be wrong can quickly become something we routinely practice to get ahead.
Cheating is defined in the dictionary as, to deceive by trickery; swindle, however the dictionary fails to tell you if it is right or wrong to cheat. People have many different beliefs when it comes to cheating; some think its fine to do while others completely disapprove. I intend to show the different beliefs, from different perspectives of people, and also intend on proving which beliefs have the strongest and weakest arguments.
