After having read the Academic Integrity policy and everything that it includes, I would have to state that my understanding of this policy is that it is a policy of pure honesty and trust. This policy, to my understanding, is exactly what it says it is. This policy is all about integrity. Integrity, by my definition, is doing what is right when nobody is watching. In other words, integrity is doing what is expected of you, even if/when you are by yourself. Integrity encompasses a large group of admirable traits, such as trustworthiness, honesty, and good morals. So, when applying integrity into school, the Academic Integrity policy comes into play.

This includes values such as avoidance of cheating or plagiarism; maintenance of academic standards; honesty and rigor in research and academic publishing.” In a more simple way of saying this, it means that you are honest and responsible in your academic studies. To have academic integrity is a quality that every student, whether in high school or college, should posses. It is vital to everyday learning that a student completes their work without cheating or being dishonest in any way, shape, or form. Having academic integrity also provides value to the degree that you will earn and set you up for your future. Many employers in our society prefer to hire graduates in which they believe have high personal, as well as, academic integrity. They are looking for positive influences and someone who they can trust, and I believe that is very important for all students to know before starting college, and even high school. Prior to completing the Academic Integrity Program, I thought academic integrity was as simple “not cheating.” I considered it a policy solely implemented to ensure that students learned the material. Due to this, the definition of what academic dishonesty is has become blurred for not only students, but teachers as well. More often than not, students are not aware that what they are doing qualifies as cheating. Colleges and universities do a poor job of educating their students and instructors on what qualifies as cheating. Although most schools have honor codes in place to protect their students’ integrity, the guidelines can lack clear boundaries and consistency. These guidelines can also lack how instructors are to enforce these rules, leaving them without a clear process to follow. This can lead to many accidental violations of the honor codes. It is important institutions regularly reinforce the principles of academic dishonesty, so that students are aware and can avoid such situations. This cause is less apparent than others, but transpires frequently in schools everywhere.
