Academic Integrity and Honor Codes in Schools
In today's society, there is a trend being set by both college and high school students. The trend is moving from academic integrity to academic dishonesty. What exactly is the difference between academic integrity versus dishonesty? I believe that academic integrity is a state of pride and belief in ones own knowledge and work. It is taking what you know and applying it in a scholarly systematic way without help from any other source that would make any part of the work not their own. It is taking pride and credit for work that is completely there's. Academic dishonesty on the other hand is taking someone else's work and claiming it as your own. So given the shift in trends in this

First, this gives students more time to spend on other subjects or extracurriculars because a paper that would normally take them three hours to write now takes them thirty minutes. However, there are downfalls to this as well. Even though cheating may seem like a good idea and maintains their good grades for their parents, teachers, and themselves, what are they actually learning from that assignment? An assignment that was given to make them smarter and more competent in a given are has been completely wasted. So in essence the education that they are so worried about obtaining and maintaining is the education that they are throwing away. A third reason leading to the increase in academic dishonesty is the pure and simple fact that once a student cheats on a paper or any type of homework assignment and does not get caught and reprimanded for their actions, the more that student believes that they can keep doing it without getting caught. The more and more that a student cheats and gets away with it the more the student feels that they are invisible and can continue doing it. This is a sad occasion when this happens because the student is only hurting themselves. They are not hurting their parents or their teachers because they are not the ones that are going to be getting a job from this education it is the student that is hurting the students. Not every student
Academic integrity is a moral concept that ensures that you are honest in your academic endeavors as you seek knowledge and accept responsibility for your actions and the consequences of those actions. As defined by Mohawk College, “academic dishonesty refers to any conscious, deliberate or reckless step or omission taken to obtain academic credit through deception and/or fraudulent means” (Mohawk College, 2008). It involves understanding what constitutes as academic dishonesty, such as “misrepresentation of personal credentials of achievement, plagiarism, cheating on examinations or tests, passing the work of others off as your own, and undisclosed conflicts of interest” (Mohawk College, 2008). Academic dishonesty is the opposite of academic
Academic integrity is the code of academic conduct that is set forth by educational institutions. It is the catalyst for the mission of most institutions. The expectation is that students will be honest and responsible as it pertains to academia. It defines the academic rigor in research and academic publishing and gives value to the institution (Spain & Robes, 2011). Academic integrity also applies to the way that an individual behaves both personally and professionally, and is a true measure to the worth of the degree that is earned. This standard of behavior applies to both students and faculty. In short this is just thief of
As college standards increase yearly, students feel greater pressure to succeed. As a result of the rising academic expectations, cheating has become a national issue and most students have admitted to cheating at least once in their educational career. Overloaded with school work, students see cheating as an advantage and step towards academic success. Thus, cheating results from an urgency to do well in school and being overscheduled.
Prior to completing the Academic Integrity Program, I thought academic integrity was as simple “not cheating.” I considered it a policy solely implemented to ensure that students learned the material. To me, cheating was mostly plagiarism, or trying to pass off someone else’s work as your own. It was not until I completed the program that I began to understand the long-term effects of cheating on the peers, the professor, and the institution. Now, I understand that cheating affects not just me, but also the other students in my courses and the university’s reputation. I also understand the reasoning behind the university’s strict policies regarding academic integrity violations, as they are in place to protect the student, the classmates,
After reading “Stuyvesant Students Describe the How and the Why of Cheating” by Vivian Yee, I can wholeheartedly agree with the opinions and facts presented in the article. Why? The cheating described, whether light or serious, is prevalent in the schools that I have attended. The goal of attending a prestigious university and obtaining a prestigious job has led to a craze over grades, to the point where students describe the feeling as “...addictive, in a bad way, in a sick way” (Yee 20). Similarly, the craze over better grades has led to various actions of cheating such as plagiarism and copying of answers. As stated in the article, cheating has become such a prevalent and normal aspect of schools today that the “lines are blurry”, and that no one really knows what
It has been said that "academic integrity is the moral code or ethical policy of academia. This includes values such as avoidance of cheating or plagiarism; maintenance of academic standards; honesty and rigor in research and academic publishing." (Wikipedia). This basically means that anyone who holds high academic standards will restrict themselves from cheating or plagiarizing. I hold these academic standards to myself, and everyone should because any form of cheating is unacceptable. Academic integrity is essential in any scholar's life; it is especially essential in mine. I believe that all of my work should be my own thoughts and any work that comes from other sources should be credited. Academic integrity holds a high significance in my life, and without it, I wouldn't know anything.
It teaches kids that choosing the wrong choice, as long as it gets the job done, is okay and that passing is more important the learning. In order to combat this issue schools should at times have stricter cheating polices, therefore teaching the student better morals, before they the “real” world. Cheating happens everywhere, and in every grade, and it should be stopped before it becomes a bigger problem that can’t be stopped. Schools should work towards helping kids complete projects that may be challenging, instead of focusing on just giving kids work that they don’t feel is in their own comfort
The social mantra that life’s success is determined by one’s academic accomplishment contributes to the pressure placed upon students to strive for the best academic standing, often at any cost. Unfortunately, in this scenario the focus on grades may have more importance than the focus on acquiring knowledge and a lack of academic integrity has become increasingly more prevalent in the educational system within the last few decades. As a result schools have begun invoking severe punishment upon students who exhibit academic dishonesty within their schoolwork. Although academic dishonesty is deceitful and fraudulent, the social and economic
The principle of academic integrity stretches beyond the limits of a classroom. Good students are honest with themselves, their professors, their roommates, and their community.
There are many causes to why a student do things. Some students do things for the benefit of their selves and some students do things for the benefit of others. A lot of things students do have no meaning but cheating is not one of them. Cheating is not a good thing but also I do not feel as if it’s a bad thing. Some see cheating as an easy way out and some see cheating as the only way out. Nobody can judge no one how the earn anything because it may be the only way. I think that the three main reasons a student cheat is they fear they will fail, they have poor time management, or they are just not really into the assignment.
What is academic misconduct and how it is define? The definitions and type of academic misconduct varies from academic institutions to institutions but the foundations and basis are essentially the same – to outline guiding boundary for students to abide by. For example, the definition of academic misconduct is defined by the University of California, Berkeley Division of Student Affairs as “Academic misconduct is any action or attempted action that may result in creating an unfair academic advantage for oneself or an unfair academic advantage or disadvantage for any other member or members of the academic community. This includes a wide variety of behaviors such as cheating, plagiarism, altering academic documents or transcripts, gaining access to materials before they are intended to be available, and helping a friend to gain an unfair academic advantage.” So with a clear and simple definitions and examples, why do students ranging from high school all the way to graduate school still engaged in some form of academic misconducts or another? “About 20% of college students admitted to cheating and plagiarism in their high school years during the 1940’s. By 1999, 75 to 98 percent of college students admitted to the same academic dishonesty in high school” (Phillips, 2009).
Cheating provides a quick way of smartness to achieve good grades, but in the long run it causes serious consequences which may not be eliminated from life like it makes students dishonest, lazy, dumb, less creative, incompatible and non thinkers in life. Due to lack of knowledge they always tend to face failures and distress in life by which they also lose their self respect and confidence in them. They become less adhere to seek challenges and risks in life and always seek to stay away from
Academic dishonesty is another facet of unethical behaviour. It is an action or attempt that results in creating an unfair academic advantage for oneself or a disadvantage for any other member of academic community. A child uses his or her experiences in society to shape personal ethics. Family has a strong influence on one's values and behaviour, parents establish rules from the start and it becomes the basis for our ethics and morals. A personal ethical commitment is part of what makes students a success. A lack of ethical commitment will always result in acdemic failure. I personally believe that students who are academically dishonest cheat themselves out of an education and harm their fellow students by screwing the grading curve for the class as a whole. Therefore academic ethics are vital and students should commit themselves to maintaining highest personal ethical standards.
Another reason why students cheat is because they did not do their work on time. Bobby would have days where he did not get his work done on time. He would go out with friends instead of work on his homework. Bobby never liked to tell his friends he could not hang out with them. Bobby never told his friends he could hang out after he was done with his work for school. Bobby thought he would have time
While discussing the topic with my friend she gave me her reason for cheating. Her response was “If I cheat and don’t get caught, the reward is an A in the class. The consequences won’t be too bad. Although it is impossible to understand why students cheat for example, I have grown up in a community in which it was normal for students to cheat and get acknowledged unknowingly for cheating by teachers and administers. I have never been a cheater because it doesn't get you anywhere but set yourself for failure. But my friend and others think
