Introductory Statement

Motivation is the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a certain way. It is

the general desire or willingness of someone to do or accomplish something. As an educator, it is important that the needs of all students are met. Each year teachers are held accountable for the academic success of their students; however, student success also depends upon the level of effort they put into their education. Often, students do not meet academic expectations due to lack of motivation, which can lead to academic failure. It is necessary for teachers to implement different teaching strategies when teaching students with different academic abilities and levels. It is the responsibility of the teacher to ensure that all students perform at or above grade level and that they meet the educational expectations required by state.

Statement of Problem Many students are not motivated to learn. Educators have given their undivided attention to how best to motivate students to learn year after year. Many researchers believe that by implementing differentiated classroom instructions students become more motivated to learn. According to Kostelecky and Hoskinson (2005), motivating students to learn is a widespread problem across the United States. Their findings concluded motivation for learning occurs when teachers incorporate a variety of resources in teaching content such as technology—research and internet games. It is important to employ different teaching strategies when teaching students with different academic abilities and levels. By doing so, we can infer if high school students become more motivated to learn by using different teaching strategies. Many researchers believe that by implementing differentiated classroom instructions students become more motivated to learn. In comparison, high school students are motivated in different ways to learn as it is with other grade level students. Differentiated instructions introduce students to a variety of learning instructions. By employing new teaching strategies in the classroom, incorporating hands-on activities, and by linking experiences to content are influential to student’s motion to learn.
