Academic Stress causes Teenage Depression Academic stress is very common in student’s lives. Many students assume that making the academic experience their first priority now, will increase the chance of success in the future. School is an important aspect in most teenagers lives and by being so important a teenager can become depressed very effortlessly at school or because of school. Academic stress can take complete control over a student’s life, sometimes leading to depression. At school this may lead to poor attendance, a significant drop in grades or even annoyance with schoolwork, in a good student. On the other hand when parents are putting too much pressure on their children it brings them down at times. The children will feel guilty and shameful if they do not fulfill their parent’s expectations. The child does not wish to disappoint their parents and so therefore the motivation to do well in school comes from within. However it is important that children understand the deeper meaning of doing well in school. All in all, there should be a limit to parental pressure on their child’s academics because it may produce their child with an imbalanced personal development. They will lack of interaction, which will result in poor social skills. Just like there are numerous causes that trigger academic stress, there are just as many ways to cope with it. There are numerous causes to academic stress, but one of the most common is procrastination. Poor prioritization and time management often affects students mentally, physically and academically which will eventually cause stress. Ranjita Misra, a professor in the Department of Health and Kinesiology at Texas A&M University conducted a survey surveying 249 college students. The study showed that anxiety and unproductive time management were strong predictors of academic stress.
