According to Louis Montrose, the theory of New Historicism is “a reciprocal concern with the historicity of texts and the textuality of history”. One can interpret it by taking history as a dynamic force because it is not said to have any fixed, objective facts. But it should be dealt like literature with which it interacts, as a text which must be interpreted. On the other hand, a piece of literature is said to be a discourse which consists of cultural constructs in the historical context of the specified era.

One can analyze Shelley’s masterpiece “Frankenstein” by applying the theory of New Historicism. This gothic novel is a depiction of the historical unrest of the nineteenth century throughout the course of the novel. …show more content…

History brings itself up through the experiences of the author (Shelley) as well as the monster.
Viewed in its historical context, Frankenstein poses a question in about the relationship of literature and political ideologies.
Mary Shelley brings in the societal values and political images that were really present at that time. She talks about grave-robbing, reviving the dead, monsters who destroy their own creators, which are all anti-Jacobian motifs. By creating the monster, Shelley has given a new form to the conservatives who used such images to warn the readers about the dangers of reform. It was their original political import. However, Shelley’s new form is more complex, subjective and problematic as compared to the earlier monster fictions in the political tradition. Through her writing style, one could make out how deeply the Revolutions have affected her as she uses revolutionary symbolism in a post revolutionary era when the concerned political movements no longer appear viable. In a way she brings psychology in politics.
