According to the movie, To Sir with Love, which is based on the novel with the same title by E.R. Braithwaite, and the book Unless it moves the human heart, by Roger Rosenblatt, the main attributes that define a great teacher are patience, self-control, trust and care. Great teachers value each person’s ideas and opinions, making their students feel safe enough to express their feelings and learn to respect and listen to others as well. Such teachers create a friendly and welcoming learning environment for all students. Here, Mr. Thackeray shows viewers that patience and self-control go hand in hand. This is when Thackeray takes a new approach on how he will teach these students, certain not to lose his cool again. This overall consistency in exercising patience, self-control and respect for himself and his students prevails throughout the story. These fundamental characteristics contribute to his winning the hearts of the otherwise unyielding group. After winning the hearts of his students Mark Thackeray gains their trust. And because he was so respected among them, they begin to respect each other, because he is teaching them the importance of respecting one another. The boys began to take better care of their hygiene, and if they wished to address the women, they referred to them as Ms. Mr. Thackeray is also teaching them everyday lessons, which they would use not just in the classroom, but in their everyday lives. A great teacher, helps her or his students to apply what they learn not just in the classroom but outside as well. The students trust Mr. Thackeray; they begin to tell him what bothers them in their home lives. He shows them that he is not just there to give them a lesson and send them home, he made himself available to them in every way. He truly cares for them, and they know that.
