The Elementary and Secondary Education Act aimed to provide for the children’s long-term welfare by improving their schools and the resources available to them. In 1965, when this Act became law, there was a large “achievement gap” stratified by race and poverty. With this act they really wanted to close the gap by setting benchmarks and goals to measure the progress of students.
The achievement gap is defined as the disparity between the performance groups of students, especially groups defined by gender, race/ethnicity, ability and socio-economic status. The achievement gap can be observed through a variety of measures including standardized test scores, grade point averages, drop out rates, college enrollment and completion rates. The Black-White achievement gap is a critical issue in modern society’s education system. Although data surrounding the issue clearly indicates that the racial performance gap exists in areas of standardized tests, graduation rates, dropout rates, and enrollment in continuing education, the causative reasons for the gap are ambiguous—therefore presenting a significant challenge in
How should society handle the perceived differences between races when it comes to education? The goal of both researchers is to narrow the academic gap between white and black students. Both authors attribute the gap between the academic scores of black and white students from opposite sides of racial identity. As Dr. Beverly Daniels Tatum, President of Spelman College and clinical psychologist has written an article entitled “Why are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” Her approach is from the perspective of the student and how they perceive their role and upper limits while maintaining their place in their peer group's expectations of their race. Dr. Diane Ravitch, a research professor of education at New York University, has written an article entitled "The Facts about the Achievement Gap.” Her approach is from the perspective of how schools and society implicitly or explicitly cast students into achievement tracks based on their race. Both approach the same idea about racial identity, but they have different solutions, such as peer groups, the school board, and who is right about the solution.
The Achievement Gap is a term that represents the difference of academic success in certain groups of students such as race, gender, and
the term receivement gap is useful because it focuses attention on educational inputs-what the students receive on their educational journey, instead of outputs-their performance on a standardized test. This refocusing also moves attention away from the students as the source of these disparities, and toward the larger structure and forces that play a role in their education and development (p. 417). Venzant-Chambers (2009) asserted the issue of the Black and White achievement gap must be viewed through other lenses opposed to the single view of Black students cannot perform as well as White students. Venzant-Chambers (2009) offered other avenues by which to examine the achievement gap such as school tracking, examining the
The “gap” as referred to in the title, is the distribution of the scores on achievement tests that differ between black and white students in the United States. The purpose of this study was to record the degree of the gap in achievement scores, decide how much of the racial gap is due to social-class, how the gap differed in the 30-year period, and how that which is credited to the social-class has changed over the years.
In debates about public education, what is the “achievement gap?” What policies have been implemented to address this
Diane Ravitch advocates to “fix” schools and to coordinate with local to conclude the achievement gap between White American, African American and Hispanic American in The Fact About the Achievement Gap. First, to fix schools is a significant essential for decline achievement gap between different races. Although the reformer sustain that African American and Hispanic American should attend privately managed charter school or private or religion school instead of public school since reformers think that African American and Hispanic student do not have progress in the past decade, reformers ignore the increasing percentage of NAEP test, which test the students with the basic skills they need; however, instead of liberating from public schools,
For my reflective integration, I found an article on the Denver Post that caught my eye. Most of the articles I found in the opinion header were about politics. With those articles being important and meaningful, they aren’t something that I am passionate about. The article I found is called “Let’s go to the moon (and back) to close the achievement gap by columnist and editorial writer Megan Schrader of the Denver Post. Closing the achievement gap has been an ongoing debate for many years in education. This drew me to the article and it will be something that I will be following.
The achievement gap is a term that has evolved over the past decades to describe
In most studies and reports, achievement gaps are addressed in terms of economic differences and little or no connection made to race. In the UC (University of California) data, it shows the intersectionality of race and income reveals important subtleties about racial achievement gaps. First, at every income level Black and Brown students are outperformed by White students. Black students are predictably the lowest performing group at every level. Second, the data shows us the astonishing achievement disparity existing between Black and White students who are equally poor. Third, poorer White students actually outperform middle-income Black and Brown students. This statement shocked me. How can White poorer students outperform middle-income
The distinctive achievement gap between black and white students are often linked with cultural theories. However, holding such “blame the victim” perspectives makes little sense since the forces that shape their behaviors are beyond the control of any individual and therefore, a structural approach blaming the system is essential to resolve this gap.
The Back White Achievement Gap: When the Progress Stopped focuses on the educational gap such as school achievement, contextual factors and educational attainment between Black and White during the early 20s and present time. Also gives theories that may be causing this educational gap to become a problem. This paper will first discuss the theory then I will tell why this is the reason.
The achievement gap in students traditionally is determined through test scores or other measurements that are defined through some sort of measurable academic achievement. Educators hammer down test taking strategies to students in preparation for end of course stage mandated assessment that when it is all said and done the students are tired of the test before it is even administered. Student achievement should be measured based on student growth and academic growth should not be the only thing educators should emphasize during the school year. Students need to character growth is a way to decrease the achievement gap and if the student improves their character then the achievement gap will be decreased through building students up from the inside out.
The problem for this client is more then just about his grades or his SAT scores. The client plans on attending Yale where his parents attended, but is worried about his SAT scores being high enough to get accepted. He is concerned about earning anything less then almost perfect grades and is worried about disappointing his parents by not getting accepted into Yale and graduating.
