THE ILIAD
The question to be answered is “What is the Greek ideal of heroism as embodied by Achilles?” Greek authors such as Homer in bodied great heroes in the culture they lived in to give hope and bravery into their society. This is one of the reasons Iliad was created, not just for the entertainment of the reader but also to tell the story of Achilles adventures. Achilles was a one man army, a hero above no other. The creek ideal of heroism was to create a hero who made the choice to be a hero or a normal man. The choice that Achilles received was to become an epic hero, to fight numerous battles like no other, but have the downfall of dying young. The Greek gods gave Achilles this choice was the faith that he would choose in their favor.
Achilles was a stubborn man but was a great hero of the Achaeans. Achilles relied on his own abilities to win battles and strived for honor no matter what it took. Although, Achilles is considered an epic hero he also made bad choices that caused his untimely demise in the end. The god’s gave Achilles the choice to live his life as a normal man, with a long life or to become an epic hero that no one could surpass, with an honorable death at a young age (Davis, Harrison, Johnson, Smith and Crawford, 2009).
