Introduction
A fundamental aspect of acquiring skills in a new language is the ability to communicate messages in writing. For a teacher of English as a second language, nurturing students to develop sound writing skills is crucial to the success of the student both as a learner of the language, and their skills communication skills in reading, speaking and even listening in English. The natural ability of native speakers to communicate in a given language does not automatically indicate proficiency in their writing skills, which must be acquired.
The psycholinguist Eric Lenneberg noted that writing is a culturally specific and learned behaviour (Brown, H.D, p334). Consequently, writing skills are important to developing a

In addition, writing requires a sound understanding of English expressions, idioms and culture to be able to communicate effectively and accurately.
There have been a variety of methodologies of varying effectiveness developed and used for teaching writing skills. Thomas Gorman critiques some of these methods (Celce-Murcia, M, p189-199). In my view, and the view expressed in numerous literature, none of these methods are in itself complete and sufficient for a proper mastery of the ability to write effectively in English. In addition to a solid foundation in grammar and sentence composition skills, a well-rounded approach to teaching and learning skills in written English will probably draw on aspects of all these methodologies and be flexible enough to be adapted to the requirements and aptitudes of the learner (Prabhu, N.S).
The Free Expression and Controlled Expression Methods
According to Gorman, the controlled expression method teaches students to substitute words in sentence construction, then sentences in paragraph construction, and finally to compose whole paragraphs and essays or stories.# The method is restraining because it teaches writing as the manipulation of fixed patterns which are learnt by imitation. In contrast, the free expression method motivates students to produce freely and extensively large quantities of writing without regard for the quality of the writing or revising it for errors.
In my view, an
It is essential to understand that classes taken in grade school do not give students a full understanding of each subject. With the topic of writing, there will always be a new lesson to learn, an aspect to improve, or a differing way to explain. Author Craig Vetter states in Bonehead Writing, “This is your enemy: a perfectly empty sheet of paper. Nothing will ever happen here except what you make happen.” Each story, essay, or response comes from a writer’s experiences. With each attempt at a new piece comes an underlying story of emotions the writer is facing. Each person’s writing is unique and the ideas people have are related to their past experiences and what they believe to be familiar with when deciding which writing style to use. As a high school student, I have learned many things about writing that helped me become the improved writer I am today, but the most essential advice I have received is practice makes perfect. Although there is no actual perfect way of writing, I have discovered that each essay I write, my writing improves. It is easier to spot mistakes, find areas to improve, and ponder elevated word choice to use.
I immensely struggled when writing. Taking my scrambled thoughts and uncoordinated analysis and converting it into clean and understandable words on a page was arduous. I could not express my thoughts in proper academic format. I understood the importance of writing to every subject. It was essential that I learn to condense my ideas and feeling into coherent written word. After much debate, I decided that the best way to improve my writing skills was to take an advanced English course.
Writing Is a kind of typing symbols, letters and other writing tools to help the writer communicate with the reader or connect his ideas. It is the fourth skill in language skills and the most one that needs creation and imagination. In this essay, I am going to write about the importance of developing writing.
Writing is an essential tool and has been noted as a precursor for great speaking by teachers at all grade levels. However, with writing being an important aspect throughout one’s academic career and beyond, it is one of the most tedious tasks to teach. It sounds like a cliché, but in order to get better at something, one has to keep completing the task and each time, accomplish something different while maintaining prior knowledge. There are various ways that enhance a student’s writing abilities and the focus of these research strategies will prove that encouraging students to write enhances writing.
Last year I was able to make strides in my writing ability, more so then I have in all of my previous years. I want to continue with that growth and show my ability to write proficiently. I understand the importance of writing is unimaginable. As a future engineer it's essential in order to persuade coworkers with my ideas and beliefs. Writing effectively also gives me the ability to discuss and argue my viewpoints in life. My main belief is in order to get better you need to practice more so I intend to write more stories and read more to strengthen my vocabulary. English is needed throughout all aspects of my life. It goes beyond just having a good mark in English
From elementary school to high school, I was taught that my writing had to be structured and follow strict criteria. After I arrived in Mr. Mukherjee’s ENG 102 class, I was given the opportunity to express my creative freedom through words and graphical pictures. It can often be difficult and challenging to improve upon my own writing abilities unless motived with an idea in mind. When looking back on my time at ASU, I thought about the goals that I wanted to address for myself and the course goals that my instructor had set for the class. These goals include ones that I had accomplished to the best of my ability and ones that I need to address as well as improve.
Teachers, parents, and friends often tell students exactly what the writing process should entail and how long it should take. However, the older I get, the more I realize that the writing process varies not only from person to person, but also from one writing project to the next. Throughout my years of life, I have written countless papers, ranging from a persuasive speech to an extensive research paper, and each project requires an altered version of my personal writing process. While each individual has his own writing process, there can be many similarities between different writing processes. Finding one’s individual writing process takes trial, error, and repetition. When an individual finally uncovers his unique writing process, better thought, work, and writing is produced.
In today’s workforce, jobs are heavily based upon the skills that one has and how well one can perform them in their field of study. A major component skill that lacks in many young people today is writing. Writing plays is an important role in life, one needs it to communicate with other people. If young people are not taught this in their years of schooling and do not learn to master it, consequently they will come out on the bottom with poor writing skills. Which in
Throughout the seven weeks that I have taken this writing composition course, I have developed skills to help me improve my own writing. Using the writing process is one of the main focuses in the course. The writing process helps writers develop and revise their essay as they work their way up to creating the final draft that can be presented. Although there are many areas in my own writing where I can get better, I have found that my writing has improved in many ways while practicing using the writing process.
English is a hard language to learn, for there are numerous elements of effective usage and writing. Many people, including me, struggle in writing because of a lack of knowledge. Since middle school, English was not a strong suit of mine. I struggled with the simplest of tasks often taking a considerably longer time to complete a task than the other students. Unmotivated teachers and a lack of interest resulted in remedial writing skills. To put it simply, I had little confidence in my writing and I dreaded taking the class because of the writing involved. In spite of my fears, I took the course and I was able to perfect and challenge my mediocre writing skills.
A learner’s ability to communicate effectively through writing to his/her target audiences is a major prerequisite for academic success. It is also a major pillar of success in one’s career across all areas of practice. Even though, writing clearly is critical to one’s academic and career success, I have not always loved writing. In fact, for a long time I despised writing. At one point, I had a feeling that my writings skills were bound to remain stagnated throughout my life. However, time has proven that I was wrong. My attitude and outlook towards virtually all genres of writing has changed positively. The various helpful methods I
It is used as an organisational tool, mode of communication, transferring information to another, a prompt for thinking and, to reinforce relationships (Cremin & Myhill, 2012). An example would be making a list of things to do in a piece of paper to be reminded of tasks and duties. Curriculum and policy documentation of writing may not always sharpen the child's writing skills. It can help as a guideline but writers are developed through writing and reflecting on their writing experiences (Cremin & Myhill, 2012). Completing writing exercises and implementing reading journals can improve an individual’s writing skills. Writing is a participation to set a specific social practise. It is then shaped by social and historical understanding about what writing is, what form it takes and what it is good for in specific contexts (Cremin & Myhill, 2012). For example, Arabians has their own form of language which is in Arabic symbols instead of letters like the English language. Language can symbolise an individual. Educators should inspire their students to learn a different language other than their native language. The twenty-first century’s technology has helped the way language has
In our everyday lives, the origin of our ability to communicate is usually not often taken into consideration. One doesn't think about how every person has, or rather had at one time, an innate ability to learn a language to total fluency without a conscious effort – a feat that is seen by the scientific community "as one of the many utterly unexplainable mysteries that beset us in our daily lives" (3).. Other such mysteries include our body's ability to pump blood and take in oxygen constantly seemingly without thought, and a new mother's ability to unconsciously raise her body temperature when her infant is placed on her chest. But a child's first language acquisition is different from these
Writing is one of the four basic skills to be taught for the students. It is a way for students to express their idea and opinion. The important of writing can be seen in daily activities when they need to write short texts such as memos, invitation letters, sympathy notes, brochure, article, business letters, applications letter and many others. Through writing students can transfer their experiences and knowledge to others. So, they should be able to produce sentences and develop it into paragraphs and essays. It is active thinking process of the students to plan, arrange and express idea in order the text could be understood by the readers. A good writing helps avoid misunderstanding between the writer’s idea and the reader’s opinion.
It is very crucial in any writing EFL program, to adopt the systematic philosophy in teaching L2 writing. As a former EFL writing teacher, I have experienced many ways in teaching writing; though, I found the best way to approach is to adapt the process-oriented instruction that hypothesized writing as global skills by following particular stages that well-structured writing (Ferris, D., & Hedgcock, J., 2014, p 63). Writing is a difficult skill that requires approaching steps to accomplish writing goals as a one completed piece. Hence, I do believe that writing in English for ESL students, should be systematically formed into stages such as: prewriting, planning, drafting, and editing to meet the learners’ scaffolding that will minimize the difficulties that they may encounter when writing (Ferris, D., & Hedgcock, J., 2014, p 65).
