Across the nation employment rates are holding steady for individuals with intellectual disabilities and no progress is being made to increase those percentages. Disability employee opportunities are not fair and lacking equity. The problem is that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have a difficult time trying to receive employment opportunities. There are numerous factors that attribute to the cause of this issue, which include individuals with disabilities can only attain lower wage jobs, discrimination in the workplace, and their lack of a standardized education across the nation. The Office of Disability Employment was designed “to develop and influence disability employment-related policies and practices” (Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) - U.S. Department of Labor, 2017). The disability employment statistics show that in March of 2017, the labor force participation for people with disabilities is 20.4 percent compared to the 68.7 percent for people without disabilities. Additionally, the unemployment rate for people with disabilities is 10.6 percent, while people without disabilities are at 4.3 percent. The Office of Disability Employment sponsors Employer Assistance and Resource Network on Disability Inclusion, Job Accommodation Network, LEAD Center, National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability for Youth, and Partnership on Employment and Accessible Technology, which are resources that are trying to incorporate individuals with disabilities into the workplace (Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) - U.S. Department of Labor, 2017). Furthermore, CNN Money News gathered data on the imbalance of employment for the disabled and non-disabled. The Americans with Disability Act (ADA), which passed in 1990 was established to help alleviate the discrimination tension that existed towards the disabled.
