Action Plan: Michael Watson is put in a hard place after his meeting with Alan Mathews because they don’t agree on how the classes should be taught. As a new teacher, Watson needs to listen to the critiques that Mathews gave him, but he also needs to stick to his own philosophies as a teacher. It is important to understand that students learn in many different ways, so he needs to find a balance that will satisfy both Alan Mathews and himself. Watson needs to make sure that his teaching strategies are truly effective and then be able to portray to Mathew’s why his strategies are working for his students. Alan Mathew’s thinks Michael Watson’s class is too easy and that he is not challenging his students. He thinks the students are not doing all of the homework, which is leading to lengthy discussions on irrelevant topics. It is clear that not all the objectives are being meet in the class, thus there is a need for better classroom management. Overall, Alan Mathew’s wants to see Michael Watson as a more demanding teacher that challenges his student’s abilities to prepare them for college. To start, I would suggest that Michael Watson begins each unit or topic with a pre-test. Pre-tests allow teachers to evaluate what the students already know and checks to make sure that the lessons are actually challenging. After a pre-test is administered, teachers will gain a better understanding of how to construct valuable lessons that are within the students zone of
At the end of the article Keene also points out that the way teachers handle and teach during class is what’s forcing theses harder to reach claims. The teaching ways show that not giving a challenge to the students makes it harder for them to achieve their goal and try to succeed in college.
On the other hand, Rebecca Cox’s believes that student’s anxiety and fear are taking away their success in college. Although, she also has the similar beliefs to Paulo Freire, teachers not being approachable for the students in need. For example, the student would rather not do the assignments, or ask for help, resulting into failure. Changing from high school into college is challenging but students should not be afraid to approach the professor with questions. Though, professors obtain that high title, they are there to help students understand each section without any issues. Cox justifies this statement by explaining,
several precepts for teachers by which they must guide their focus. By caring, Noddings writes, a teacher is pursuing, “an education for whole persons,” which, “must address social, emotional, and ethical issues, as well as academic.” (238, Educating Whole People) When teachers present several different viewpoints on controversial issues, teachers do not teach students to be relativistic. Rather, by empowering students to explore and navigate through the issues which are most important to them, teachers will inherently be showing students the importance
In part 2, I will provide a critical reflection on my own teaching practice during recent placement by making detailed connections to an appended lesson plan.
I was really astonished when Zimmerman quoted that “nobody really knows how well professors teach or how much their students learn in college. It reveals to me that, Zimmerman actually knows the trick that administrators and faculty’s
When I am developing units plans, I ensure that all my lessons are deeply infused with the Common Core learning standards. I am also a firm believer in incorporating differentiated instruction. I am able to differentiate through analyzing test results. From those results, I design tiered assignments to give students the appropriate level of material to complete. I deem it is important to know all of my students as individuals. When planning, my students interest and learning styles are taken into consideration. I have also enhanced the phonics based reading program, by infusing whole language learning. I enjoy creating hands on centers such as sensory bin dig, book box, and egg addition. When I find that students are having difficulty, I reach out to my colleagues for ideas. I especially do so for my students with IEP's. I regularly communicate with the speech, SETTs, and OT teachers. By taking these steps, I can execute lessons that are curriculum driven and
The teacher candidate has always felt she puts more pressure on herself than her external factors. She is not as nervous to teach to students, but teaching in front of Maercker Intermediate School staff members. On top of putting pressure on herself, she become anxious worrying about what her cooperating teacher and other Maercker staff think. The teacher candidate knows she is not qualified teacher, and can make a few teaching errors along the way, but she worries if she not demonstrating the right teaching strategies and methods. At times, she did not feel confident to teach, but over time, she learned to not focus on what staff members think of my teaching, but focus on how I will impact student learning. Miss Butzen has communicated with Mrs. Corcoran on effective teaching strategies, which she suggests have students work in cooperative learning groups and have students participate during teacher-directed instruction. She has taken this advice, and prefers to use the interactive teaching instruction. Ashley has discovered she does not want to do the majority of teaching a lesson in lecture, teacher directed style, but have students engaged in the lesson by having students volunteer to model the measureable learning target and have students work in cooperative learning groups during the practice
This chapter offers a higher level of education. From the high school student, college student to a part of Teacher Corps, and now Mike Rose works for EOP, becomes a tutor in UCLA. Throughout this chapter, I can see the view of education of the author changes time by time. He is now facing with the highly successful students and the main problem here is how unprepared they are. Actually, I used to have that problem, it is not easy to integrate into new environment. In addition, I was struggled and stressed so much when I got really bad result in the first few tests in the first year in high school even I kept asking question and memorizing the whole lecture but now, I understand the problem was all about the study styles. Besides, I find out
While revising her course composition, Nathan focused on the implied assumptions that were integrated into how she had structured the course. She quickly realized how, before her year as a student, she had not considered the other classes students had in between her class periods, and had included articles that did not effectively contribute to learning in the class. “The answer to the problem of reading that I now favor is to hone the assignments to those I will actually employ in my classes while at the same time creating new classroom forums for making direct and immediate use of the readings I seriously want my students to prepare” (R. Nathan, 2005, p.138). Within the rest of the section “Re-entry: The Student as Teacher”, Nathan continued to talk about how other professors should try to comprehend the actual impact that academics have on students, and that assignments that do not have much to do with important course material will most likely go undone. Another way that this experience altered Nathan’s reference to student life is that she gained a sense of compassion to the students that might fall asleep in her class, or start pulling out a snack in the middle of a lecture.
Throughout this last semester, I have been student teaching at Shawswick Middle School where I was able to take a critical look at myself as an educator. Though the teacher and I did not see eye to eye, this disagreement helped me to better form my own pedagogical beliefs and establish confidence in myself as an educator.
Over the past five years Robert Marzano has made a huge impact on how I see and implement instructional skills. The amount of research he has acquired makes all of his findings and teachings relevant and reliable. I have become an educator who thrives on researching best-practices to incorporate in my classroom. Additionally, my lessons are based on Marzano’s Framework for Quality Teaching and Learning. I have become so familiar with the elements that I have provided mini-training sessions to teachers at my school site. I share the same mindset as Marzano in believing that “Teachers who set pedagogical growth goals and work to achieve them, either alone or with a coach or administrator, improve their expertise and instructional skill”
I am looking forward to reading the article you shared by Annie Murphy. I think it’s great when educators share strategies that are effective and help support students learning. I plan to implement many of the strategies that you shared from Murphy in your initial post. For instance, one of them was to start with a question instead of the answer. True open-ended question genuinely invite authentic reflection and discussion (CEA, 2016, para. 20). As we ask open-ended questions this is a way to elicit discussion, brainstorm solutions to a problem, or create new opportunities. Also, the quality of student response will increase if, they know the teacher is seriously interested in their input, plans to discuss the results with them, and is willing
I’D START BY A CRUCIAL POINT WHICH GREATLY INFLUENCED MY EDUCATION; I GREW UP IN A TIME OF WARS. SCHOOLS WANTED TO GO THROUGH THE WHOLE CURRICULUM AS FAST AS POSSIBLE AND SEND STUDENTS HOME WHERE THEY ARE NO LONGER THEIR RESPONSIBILTY TO PROTECT. THIS HAS LEAD TO A CERTAIN RUSH THROUGH THE CHAPTERS. UNFORTUNATELY, TEACHERS IN PEACEFUL COUNTRIES TEND TO FASTFORWARD LESSONS TOO OUT OF FEAR OF THE COORDINATOR
In conclusion, so far in this class I have found many things meaningful to me. The academic success skills and tools they shared with myself and the class have actually helped me complete this essay in a timely manner. I am beyond thankful to have three great instructors to teach me more about the great Midland University and what it all has to offer. I believe that if I make the most out of this class, I am more likely to find success in the future. Module One has had a positive impact on my student life and I am beyond excited to learn more every week in the following
Gibson had explained to us that the biggest challenge is enjoying what you teach, especially when there can be multiple classes that you teach at a time. For example, in an episode of Boy Meets World, Mr. Feeny wants to retire because he felt unsatisfied with his teaching and believes that his students are not benefiting from him. Furthermore, in this particular episode, a couple of students egged and his tepid his house because, they did not approve of the exam schedule. As a result, Mr. Feeny felt that he had failed his students because he felt that he does not have anything else to teach them. This is due to his age and taking on all these classes to teach at one time. Overall, Mr. Gibson could have given us a bunch of more important information for our questions because, I felt that he did not really answer them well and that he was just talking about what he felt like talking about. On the other hand, I was able to write down some good notes from him and learned multiple important things that will help me to become a better teacher. He did talk about the importance of what you need to know when you have a classroom of your own. You would expect that Mr. Gibson is probably a really good teacher because he has a bunch of classes that the principal hired him to teach and that the kids probably like him a lot because he talked about keeping the classroom in
