VIDEO: Actual real-life shoot-outs of cops vs. very bad people ... A cop on the street endures continual contact with drunks, druggies, the mentally disturbed, and violent criminals. On a daily basis, they deal with life-and-death situations, and know quite well that any situation - without notice - can turn very bad where the only immediate option is to use deadly force necessary for their own personal safety and survival. Those who are family-members and close friends of a law enforcement officer are also fully aware of the public dangers and human risk that are actually involved with the job. On the other hand, a lot of the general public typically has an ill-conceived and unrealistic notion that a cop has full control in any situation in
Police officers are constantly being faced with the unknown dangers all around them. Police face the danger of getting shot in almost any situation. Policemen could get shot during a building search, or even at a simple traffic stop. For example in San Antonio, Texas, a dash cam video was released showing that an officer was making a routine traffic stop because a man in a truck ran a stop sign. When the truck pulled over, the driver hopped out of his truck and began shooting at the officer. The officer began to return fire and in doing so he shot and killed the driver. Reports state that the Officer stopped Michael Bradley because he didn 't come to a complete stop at a stop sign. As the Officer conducted the stop, Michael Bradley fired four shots from his vehicle. The President of the San Antonio Municipal Officers
As a police officer, the major objectives are to maintain order, enforce the law, protect one’s property, and to save lives. In addition, police are divided into two roles based on how they perform their duties. The two roles of a police officer are a public servant and a crime fighter. A police officer whose role as a public servant is to serve all types of people, as well as criminals. Public servants regularly provide advice and make judgments as to the degree of risk they should take with the public. Many decisions involving risk are relatively easy to make, but others are complex and significant consequences (Kernaghan and Langford, 2016). These risks may involve using force and the consequences could be media backlash or a potential termination. Public servants abide by the oath and uphold the integrity and honor of the organization as an officer. Also, public servant officers like to play it safe because they like to be known as ordinary citizens who like to go home to their
Many people see police officers as real life heroes; some see them as dirty people with the authority to do whatever they want. Over the past twenty years
Have you ever asked yourself what it would be like to become a police officer. Becoming a police officer isn’t an easy take because they have to risk their life everyday to protect and serve the community. They have to go through the dangers of arresting criminals when there is a chance that they could die. However, in today’s society only a small amount of the police officers actually serves their community and protect citizens from danger. Right now, most police officers abuse their power to the point where they don’t seem to care for the safety of the community. They would usually arrest innocent people, make accusations, and even use their power as a source to show their dominance. If you think about, whenever you are stuck in traffic
Police officers aren’t called to someone’s house for them to join them for a cup of coffee, they’re called because someone is hurt, or something has gone terribly wrong. Officers respond to a call not knowing what had happened, as well as not knowing what their next course of actions are going to be because they do not know what they are about to walk in on. Going into a call they have to be quick on their feet and make an important split second decision, which can also be a life or death-threatening situation. When someone gets into a car accident or someone robs a bank the first thing witnesses and/or the victim’s do is call the police, the police are within the community’s to protect its citizens. “Officers are stressed out and stretched thin like never before- facing long hours, constantly changing shifts, understaffing, more complex caseloads and a lack of career-development opportunities, as well as growing family pressure at home.”
Since a very young age we have been taught to put our trust into police officers. If we are in distress, they are always there to help since it is their job to protect and serve the common citizen. So what happens when the individuals we are supposed to trust to bring justice are the ones causing the injustice we see in the news? Recently, several police officers have been under fire for their excessive use of force. The number of casualties caused by police officers in the recent years have citizens demanding a reform in the system that officers work under.
It goes without saying that police officers have one of the most difficult jobs on the face of the planet. To begin with, when a uniformed officer leaves his or her home each morning or evening to go to work, they can never be fully confident that they will return home. The threat of death while on the job is constant, and while danger is always looming, the day-to-day tasks of the job can often be tedious and boring. In addition to the inherent danger and tedium in a police officer’s job, police officers must also contend with a lack of respect from the general public, which has greatly increased since highly visible events in Ferguson, Missouri and in Baltimore, Maryland. With this constant on-the-job stress, and disrespect and combativeness
The role of a police officer can be rather intense at times, but they play a central part in the law enforcement system. Police officers monitor criminal activity, take part in community patrols, respond to emergency calls, issue citations, make arrests, investigate crimes and testify in court as needed. Although officers have a delegation of authority such as their chain of command, they are also given the discretion on which laws to enforce based on their trustworthiness, experiences, situation and training. Though I'm for officers having the entitlement of discretion, I strongly feel their background, values and beliefs can also cloud their judgement. While an officer's discretion has been up for debate publically due to the unnecessary
Police officers are allowed to use force as part of their day-to-day duties. Officers must use their judgment to determine when the use of force is warranted. In order for officers to make the appropriate decision, proper training must take place. In order to perform at their best, they must become familiarized with federal and state court cases, state law, and departmental policies directing such actions (Lim & Lee, 2015). According to Lim & Lee (2015) failure to fully understand and simply just following the regulations can lead to community resistance, loss of public confidence in law enforcement, and legal liabilities. Improper use of force is one of the few behaviors that reduce community confidence in police officers (Lim & Lee, 2015).
It is simple that there is an incredible degree of responsibility and expectations placed on the officer. Whereas most professions give careful thought and designing, an officer is commonly thrust into a scenario with very little advanced intelligence concerning what is occurring. Usually, an official is concerned in a scenario that has the potential to show violence. The law enforcement has to understand that typically it would be unfair to judge an entire race of people. Along with the citizens, they would also have to understand that its unfair to judge a profession based off of stories seen in media.
Police behavior has been a continuous controversy in the United States. Communities have begun to fear law enforcement and can potentially rebel against police forces because of the way these acts are surfacing the media. Police officers are sought out to be the people in charge of containing chaos in society, but most of the time, now, they are the root of the chaos. For the most part, I believe some police officers know how to properly hold their composure when it comes to dealing with difficult situations. I believe this is solely due to the levels of education and skills new recruitees are obtaining. There are other instances in which I believe that not all officers deserve to be police officers. I have often seen television shows about what police forces consist of, in
First, let’s look at what a police officer must go through on a daily basis. Sure, some cops just answer domestic disturbances, whereas Phil, a drunk and disorderly man, is throwing the handset phone at his wife and threatening her life, who does she call? Not the military, no she
Police officers are often viewed as oppressors and unjust by the community, when in reality they are just doing their jobs. The job of a police officer is to apprehend criminals and detect crime, and the maintenance of public order and to the extend and complication of this duty police officers often need to make split second decision that is not often view by the public as what we call “self-defense” which is a right we all have as human beings and stated in the Universal Declaration of
For instance, Imagine the life of a hardworking officer, who barely gets to rest. They soon become overworked causing them to be fatigued and not fully aware of the il-considered and rash decisions they make (Wilbur). However, this is not an excuse for when they claim that they were “too tired” and not in a proper state of mind, in the case of shooting an innocent black man. Another common excuse, that can be seen as two sided, is the fact that many cops are simply looking out for their own safety, but then are being bashed with false accusations of being “racist” afterwards. Cops, are merely acting on their judgements and what they feel is right at that exact moment, which may include shooting a man who serves as a threat, instead of putting their own life on the line (Appuzo). The thing people don’t understand, is that there are many precautions a cop can take so the situation doesn’t ever have to get to that point of seriousness. For example, the 21 foot rule, which is a commonly taught method, within the police force and has been for 20 years. The rule says an officer should at least keep 21 feet away from a subject who serves any kind of threat (usadojo). If all officers obeyed this rule in every situation, than they wouldn’t have to be so worried about their safety,
Being a police officer is not easy. Being an officer of the law comes with a certain amount of responsibility and there are a certain amount of requirements that are asked of every officer from an everyday beat cop to the chief of police. Being an officer means that your moral compass has to be better than the average person’s. You can’t give in to your vices and your emotions and with the amount of discretion officers have it’s hard to always do the right thing and make the hard calls and that’s what officers are asked to do every day. Being an officer means that you see scenes and respond to calls the average civilian will never experience a day in their lives. Crime scenes often aren’t pleasant to be around and depending on the crime they can be downright gruesome to witness. Being a police officer means you’ll see those kinds of things not once but all the time and eventually that has to wear down one’s mental health and sanity. Being an officer means that you are one of the most scrutinized people in the world. Everything you do is under a microscope and everything you say can and will be used against you in the court of public opinion. Constantly being under such pressure to not mess up and to always make the right calls, to be the face of the government on a local level and bear the brunt of public opinion good or bad, to see far too often a grisly crime scene and have to deal with the psychological damage this causes; Police are placed under an unreal amount of
