The definition of acupuncture is “to puncture with a needle” in its most basic form. Originating from China, acupuncture has spread all over the world. Its symbol is 针灸or Zhe-Jiu (Chmielnicki). Acupuncture can include traditional body needling, moxibustion, electric acupuncture, laser acupuncture, and acupressure. Moxibustion, the burning of herbs on the skin during acupuncture, is a common addition to traditional body needling. The main uses for acupuncture are getting rid of pain, protecting against infections, and regulating bodily functions. It has been proven to help with chemotherapy, allergies, headaches, strokes, and many other conditions. (World Health Organization 3). It is non-toxic, has minimal side effects, and is as effective as morphine in some cases (World Health Organization 5). The treatment depends on the problems and concerns of the acupuncturist and patient. Typically, one or two treatments a week are recommended. The patient is required to remove any offending articles of clothing and lie on a table. Then thin needles will be inserted into the ailing body part. The acupuncturist may apply electrical impulses or moxibustion to the needles. To be a licensed acupuncturist one must have received a master’s degree and have passed at least three exams (NCCAOM). Clinical trials have proven that acupuncture is significantly more beneficial than other treatments for many conditions or illnesses. The conditions covered were chemotherapy, radiation, cancer pain, allergies, asthma, headaches, lower back pain, sciatica, and stroke (World Health Organization 28-32, 42-44, 48, 61).
