Adam Smith Adam Smith was born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland. His father Adam Smith Sr. died when he was 2 months old leaving his mother alone to raise him. She encouraged him to continue his scholar ambitions and he attended the Burgh School of Kirkcaldy from 1729 to 1737, where he learned many subjects. Smith entered the University of Glasgow when he was 14 and studied moral philosophy. While in the University Smith developed passion for liberty, reason, and free speech. In 1740, Smith was the graduate scholar to undertake the studies at Balliol College, Oxford. Smith began to deliver lectures in 1748 in Edinburgh. His lecture topics included rhetoric and belles-lettres, and his lectures met success. In 1751, He earned a professorship at University
