The topic for this reflection journal focuses on adapting the curriculum and effective teaching strategies. Part A of the journal will investigate and explain Differentiated Instruction, The Universal Design for Learning as well as the Response to Instruction Model. These three approaches will aid teachers in developing a learning environment designed to maximise teaching and learning and make the curriculum accessible to all learners. Part B specifically relates to the advantages and difficulties I may encounter, as a new teacher, during the implementation stages of these models.

A variety of research articles have outlined numerous ways in which teachers can work towards incorporating Differentiated Instruction into their inclusive classroom.

For the purposes of this reflection, Ashman & Elkins’ (2009) model for developing Differentiated Instruction will be used as the primary example. Ashman & Elkins (2009) model maintains five focus areas teachers should use to guide, develop and maintain Differentiated Instruction. The following areas include:
1. The learning environment The learning environment is potentially the most important feature of a successful teaching-learning context as it is where students engage in knowledge production. Ashman & Elkins (2009) outline six fundamental principles underlying the creation of a supportive learning environment. These include the following:
a) Ensure all students are able to physically gain access to the space and every relevant learning activity independently
b) Ensure all students have the prerequisite functional skills to participate in each learning activity
c) Ensure all students have appropriate social development to participate effectively in the learning activity
d) Ensure all students are able to form personal relationships
e) Ensure all students are valued members of the class
f) Ensure all students are actively involved in the organization of the classroom
