The formal definition of adaptive physical education from the Adaptive Physical Education National Standards is “Adapted Physical Education is physical education which has been adapted or modified, so that it is as appropriate for the person with a disability as it is for a person without a disability.” The purpose of an adaptive physical education class is to work on the development of physical skills, fundamental motor skills and patterns, throwing, catching, walking, running, etc, skills in aquatics, dance, and individual and group games and sports and to include intramural and lifetime sports. These national standards are used “to ensure that physical education for children with disabilities be delivered by a qualified Adapted Physical Educator. In order to meet this purpose a set of 15 national standards representing the content a qualified Adapted Physical Educator must know to do their job was developed” (apens.org). The fifteen national standards for an adaptive physical education class are: human development, motor behavior, exercise science, history and philosophy, unique attributes of learners, curriculum theory and development, assessment, instructional design and planning, teaching, consolation and staff development, student and program development, student and program evaluation, continuing education, ethics and lastly communication. These are important to know about because these are the standards that a physical education teacher is going to need to execute for an adaptive physical education class. As a physical education teacher, I am going to have to be able to make changes to the games or activities that are being played in the class, so that everyone can participate. For example, for students that having a seeing disability, there will need to be adjustments made to the type of ball that is being used. If the class with this student was playing baseball there would need to be the right equipment used. So for this student there would need to be a larger ball used, and a bat
