Addiction is a problem that’s very prevalent in our society. Considering that drugs and alcohol are being introduced to kids in middle school, this isn’t that surprising. We as a society constantly bombarded with talks about the “war on drugs” and addiction. There are constant conversations about what should and shouldn’t be legal and what addiction really means. Is addiction in the head, or is it something a person chooses? Should we help or punish people with addictions. Everyone has opinion, but no one has any definite answer. I think becoming addicted to anything is a matter of circumstance. You could be the poorest, most miserable person in the world and never touch any type of drug or alcohol. Or you could be the richest person in the world and be addicted to all the drugs in the world, which happens a lot when looking at the lives of celebrities. I don’t think anyone wants to be addicted to anything, it just kind of happens. It might happen because they’re going through a rough patch in their life and their emotions are running high. Maybe they’ve been laid off from their job, or someone they got sick or passed away. Or maybe they don’t feel anything at all. Maybe they’re doing so well or their life isn’t changing or exciting at all. They don’t to start the downward spiral of addiction, they just fell into it. They start of simple with just a couple drinks, or a little weed every now and then. After a while that little bit isn’t enough to distract them from their
The subject of addiction has been discussed up, down and sideways. The common concept of such discussions is that they see substances like heroine, crack, and alcohol as being addictive.
Addiction, it is all around us, affecting people from all walks of life, it is not limited to certain social classes or lifestyles. It is found in every ethnic group, regardless of gender or age. It affects our neighbors, our friends, and our family either directly or indirectly. Although substances such as alcohol and illegal drugs are two of the most common addictions we hear about, there is a wide range of substances and even activities such as gambling and shopping. There is some debate whether addiction is a brain disease or a choice.
First of all, there is the Structural-Functional perspective way people view drug addiction as. The structural-functional perspective is the role the drugs do for the person or the weakening of the norms. It is the way they affect the person and what it does to them that makes them be addicted to drugs. For some people drugs relieves them. It takes them away from their problems from a while and they feel stress free and because of that feeling they receive from the drugs they like it and continue to take more and more. Those with this type of perspective well most likely disagree with this view of drug addiction and would want the problem to decrease.
Addiction is something which any person can posses, and can experience at some point in their lives. Some people are more prone to a addiction due to outside circumstances, and even though an addict can be damaging to themselves and others around them, addiction shouldn't be considered a
Drug addiction is something that everyone is vulnerable to, and that unfortunately is something that many people are going through in today’s society. Everyone is exposed to drug addiction, no matter what, it’s just up to the person to determine if they have a strong enough will power to not take the drugs. However, drugs are available to anyone who is willing to buy them, and many people are willing to spend everything they have in order to buy drugs that might give them temporary relief of a situation that they are currently struggling in; drugs are many people’s escape from the reality they are forced to be in. People have different reasons as to why they start using and abusing drugs; some may choose to do it simply because they like the feeling the drugs causes or occasionally because of the environment or situation the person was or is in, but I mostly think it’s because the person isn’t strong enough to stop taking the drugs or to say no to them.
Addiction is like most major diseases. Consider heart disease, the leading cause of death in the developed world. It's partly due to genes and partly due to poor life style choices such as bad diet, lack of exercise, and smoking. The same is true for other common diseases like adult-onset diabetes. Many forms of cancers are due to a combination of genes and life style. But if your doctor said that you had diabetes or heart disease, you wouldn't think you were bad person. You would think, "What can I do to overcome this disease?" That is how you should approach addiction.
A man by the name of Michael Robitham once said, “Alcoholics don’t have relationships- they take hostages.” If we replace “alcoholics” with addicts, this can be true of any addiction and it is problematic for our society. Addiction is on the rise in our country and it is quickly becoming an epidemic. The reason for the rapid rise is due, in part, to the fact that many children are following in their addicted parents’ footsteps. The future of our country is at risk as more youth turn towards drugs and alcohol. The government should implement programs that support addicts and their children in order to stop the cycle of addiction.
In order to understand how to treat addiction, it is important to first understand why addiction occurs. Often, there is a misconception on what steps need to be taken to deal with addiction, and what factors increase the propensity of addiction in the first place. The different models of addiction aim to clarify and justify reasons why addiction occurs both physiologically and psychologically, as well as provide plausible solutions to stop addiction. Although the models all contain differing view on why addiction occurs, and tenets and tactics on how to effectively deal with addiction, it is important to understand that any type of addiction can be harmful and dangerous.
Addiction is more than just a choice because of the effects it has on the user’s brain. A normal human brain releases chemicals when subject to different things to keep the body balanced, such as dopamine when someone is happy. When someone takes substances that are not meant for consumption (i.e. cocaine or methamphetamines) the substances alter the amount of “happy” chemicals that the brain releases and can cause a reliance on those substances later. Addiction is a three-part cycle (binge, withdrawal, and anticipation) that repeats until someone receives help for their addiction (First source). One could go through the cycle over a week or several times a day as it is different for each addict. The first stage of addiction is the binge period. This is when the user either first takes the
There are several theories on addictions. I have been exposed to one from a very early age. Addiction is not something that is intentionally planned. In my mother’s case, it was all a learned behavior from her friends. It all started as a casual beer here and there while hanging out with her associates. She engaged with her friends more often and with that came the frequency in which she drank. I believe it was an act just to feel accepted and part of the group. Years kept going by and alcohol and drugs became a necessity. Her body’s biochemistry had changed without her realizing what she had done to herself. I believe all three are a real problem and the individuals who are affected by the addiction do no really understand what is going
Addiction is considered as a stigma in today’s society. It is something that I believe that everyone has to deal with. It can be anything from food, gambling, alcohol, shoes, another person etc. Addiction can ruin someone’s life in a split second. Many times when someone is addicted to something or someone it can consume their life, and they will do anything in order to get that “fix”.
General studies have proven the fact that substances have an adverse effect on the brain and how it functions. Studies are showing a number of links between drugs and brain disorders. Medication aiding in the treatment of addiction has proven to have frequent positive results.
Drug addiction is worldwide problem that only seems to get worse with time. Drugs have been used for thousands of years by many different ingenious peoples. Stimulants like tobacco and coca leaves produce different effects than depressants like alcohol but both are highly addictive. Humans emotional habits and experiences create neural path ways of addiction. Our brain starts making these new pathways and before a he or she knows it, something that they enjoyed so much start negatively impacting their lives. Once a person becomes dependent off a drug, it becomes very difficult to get off of because of the horrible withdrawals that follows from quitting. For many people, even without growing up around an environment influenced by drugs or alcohol, some are genetically predisposed to addiction to certain substances. My family is predisposed to alcohol addiction and tobacco addiction. Our environment, childhood, and genetics all individually have a part to play in predisposition to addiction of drugs.
What if I was to tell you that everything you know about addiction is untrue? What if I was to say that our pre-conceived views on addiction were based on ignorance. It’s pretty simple really, it’s about CONNECTION NOT addiction.
Frank Zappa once said “A drug is neither moral nor immoral -- it 's a chemical compound. The compound itself is not a menace to society until a human being treats it as if consumption bestowed a temporary license to act like an asshole.” What causes people to be addicted to drugs? Most people know the bad things that will happen to drug users: they become addicted. Curiosity is the first major cause that leads to drug addiction throughout the nation. The second cause is the desire to escape from reality through drugs and can lead the user to become addicted. Lastly, the everyday environment around the individual can push him or her to become addicted to drugs. Drug addiction is a serious problem that is caused by curiosity, escapement from reality, and the environment around us.
