The snowy owl is a larger raptor type carnivorous bird whose body height is between 20 and 28 inches high. The wingspan of this owl reaches 4.2 to 4.8 feet across and its weight is between 3.5 to 6.5 pounds (“Snowy Owls”, 2012). The
The king penguins favorite food is fish and some squid. In colonies in the open they have territories but no nest. The male penguins size is 16.0 kg ,and a female size is 14.3 kg. The scientific name is the aptenodytes patagonicus. No other penguins have a longer breeding cycle then the King penguins.
Antarctic, the White world, is home to some of the world’s most extraordinary species, adapted to life in their unique home. Some, such as the enormous whales, migrate far and wide, while others, such as the Weddell seal and the emperor penguin, remain close to the continent. Millions of seabirds skim the Southern Ocean, the world’s most abundant, and species such as far-flung albatrosses and petrels circle these waters. Antarctic wildlife is generally unafraid of humans. Preserved for peace and science, Antarctic world rewards the traveler with inspiration, adventure and perspective. There's nothing quite like seeing ice shimmering in all directions, reflecting sunlight through each season, or the blazing twinkle of a velvet blanket of stars
The ones residing on the northern coast of Antarctica are prone to ice melting, due to the increasing temperatures in the spring which shorten the ice season. Those on the southern coast are of least concern due to the fact that the temperature there fluctuates less drastically. Regarding the penguins’ nesting places, immense ice sheets are essential for them to hatch and raise chicks; during the ice season, Emperor penguins march 60-100 miles to their rookery around May, where they lay, incubate, and hatch their eggs. Usually, the chicks begin fledging about December and the adults leave. However, if the ice season is shorter due to warmer temperatures, the ice breaks earlier. Before the baby penguins can fully fledge and retain waterproof and swimming capabilities, the only habitat they know is swallowed into the ocean. Then, the immature chicks, unable to swim, are swept into the sea where they drown. The quintessential nesting grounds of Emperor penguins allow for expansion of their species. After all, predation by leopard seals and killer whales naturally reduces the population, and they must repopulate to sustain. The specific, freezing march of Emperor penguins to their nesting grounds was displayed in the acclaimed French documentary “March of the Penguins.” The documentary was recorded in the southern region of Antarctica, where temperatures recorded have less effect on the early
Penguins lives in north pole. penguin eats fish, ray fish, squid, cod, krill and shrimp. They live for 10 years to 25 years. Penguins huddle up to keep warm because to protect them. A penguin is a bird but it cant fly. Baby penguins are born with out feathers. Penguins dive 50 to 60 feet to catch their food. when baby penguins are about 4 weeks old they huddle up to keep warm.
When the freezing point for water is 32 degrees fahrenheit (0 degrees celsius) what happens to life beneath the ocean when temperatures plummet in Antarctica? There has been recent discoveries of antifreeze proteins in Antarctic fish. Dr. Arthur DeVries was the first to discover such proteins, in the 1960s, and describe how they bind in the blood of fish to ice crystals and prevent the fish from being frozen.
The Emperor’s lifespan is about 18-20 years and during those years they learn to hunt, avoid the animals that prey on them, and reproduce. The Emperor Penguins prey on many aquatic animals, some more than others such as Silverfish. Silverfish is the main food source that the penguins eat (according to google) but it’s not the only source. They can also eat krill and squid. The Emperor Penguins are only 3.6
The Arctic like biomes has a very limited amount of plant and animal life compared to other biomes. These Arctic like biomes would include the Arctic of course, the Taiga, and the Tundra. They are very well known for its ridiculously cold and harsh climate and is important because it helps moderate our global climate. One example of an animal from these Arctic like biomes is the Mustela obsesipedetes. There is little doubt that creatures in these Arctic like biomes are perfectly adapted for life in the cold. In my personal opinion, I believe that the Mustela obsesipedetes is the most well adapted creature in the whole entire Animalia.
The Emperor penguins wing muscles are huge. Their wings are called flippers. When they stretch out their flippers the span is 36 inches. Their flippers are very strong and if they hit your arm it will break it.
Emperor Penguins are found in Antarctica, and have to have a high tolerance of the cold and hot whether to be able to survive the whether conditions of the Antarctic.
The legs, effectively used as oars, are set wide apart and connect rather far back to the long and rounded body. Short, glossy feathers cover its body to form a dense, fur-like covering, which is waterproof and helps keep the bird warm (Gale Encyclopedia). Penguins eat many types of fish, krill, and plankton, which helps to keep the water less polluted by algae and prevent deadly red tides. Penguins adapted to the need for food and the lack of it in the Arctic. By having hunting and mating seasons, where the females lay eggs and give them to the men to watch over and protect before it hatches, while the women go and hunt in search of food for the men and the baby, penguins have created a system to survive the cold and harsh winter weather. Penguins have evolved into creatures that are protected from the cold by their own fur and can move around by sliding on their bellies since they cannot fly. Without being able to fly penguins are vulnerable to attack from
Different types of calls are made possible by an organ in the penguin’s throat called the syrinx. Each species syrinx differs slightly allowing different calls to be made. A study was conducted by Nina Thumser and Millicent Ficken that proved each species calls differ in the number of syllables, length, and frequency. This is why a recommended method used to classify the behavior of penguins is to understand and identify vocalizations. The African penguin had the greatest maximum frequency of the longest syllable when comparing it to the braying in Humboldt and Magellanic penguins. In addition, during mating seasons both sexes of African penguins will contribute their own bray call, however, in species such as the Spheniscus mendiculus commonly known as the Galapagos penguin, it’s mainly the males who bray when breeding. The African penguin also brays more frequently because they are more likely to display aggression via braying. because in a study, also done by Nina Thumser and Millicent Ficken, it was discovered that African Penguins are more aggressive towards each other than other Spheniscus penguins were towards other members.
When female penguins return to the breeding site, they bring a belly full of food that they regurgitate for the newly hatched chicks. While the male emperors go to the sea in search of food for themselves.
The leopard seal is one of six species of seals in the Antarctic. They can get up to 1230 pounds and fall anywhere between eight and twelve feet long. These large muscular animals have dark grey backs, and spots scattered among their light grey stomachs and throat. They get their name, “leopard seal”, from their impressively long sharp carnivore like teeth. Although their front teeth are sharp, their back teeth lock together to help them catch krill. Their appetite mainly consists of penguins, fish, squid, and krill, though they will prey on other seals. Although the leopard seal is considered the most ferocious seal in Antarctica, they will play with the penguins in a friendly manner. When they are not playing with the penguin they will grab
Environment: The Antarctic Fur Seal has a widely distributed population. Most seals are found in the waters south of the Antarctic Convergence but have been spotted of the slightly north as well.
