Adeline Yen Mah had done an extraordinary job at writing Chinese Cinderella. I believe she has done an even better job at achieving her goal. The author hints multiple reasons for writing this story. Her dedication page was written for the children who weren’t loved by their parents. In Mah’s dedication page, She says that you are not alone and to use her story to encourage yourself. This leads me to infer that she wrote this because she wants to comfort unwanted children. However, I believe Mah had more intentions for writing this story. “It was painful and difficult for me to write this,”(Preface xi). Mah had never told anyone the truth about her family. Everyone thought Mah had a loving family until they went to her home for a surprise party.”... Tell them to gun dan (get lost) and never come here again,”(Chapter 14, 115). She took a slap from her stepmother and was humiliated in front of all her friends and schoolmates. People go to the therapist for these kinds of things, but she stayed strong. Even after years of rejection, she tried to reunite with her family. She wrote a book called Falling Leaves only after finding out that she had been cut out of Niang’s will. “...But she felt compelled to [write the story],”(Preface xi). For us to truly understand why this upset here, she shows us what her life was. In an interview, you can see that Mah still gets emotional with her story because all she wanted was love from her family. She wrote Chinese Cinderella because she

In the novel, Chinese Cinderella, by Adeline Yen Mah, the author shows that being unwanted can be overcome by consulting family. She proves this by showing the help that Adeline received from her Ye Ye (grandfather) and her Aunt Baba.
In the story chinese cinderella the main character Adeline faces a lot of adversity throughout the book. She faces the most her adversity at home with her parents and siblings being unfairly cruel toward her. She has a lot of courage for going through with all this pain and still staying optimistic about everything.
The Disney version of the story, Cinderella, illustrates a different moral than that of the original story. This story believes an ideal child should do what they are told and follow directions and in the end they will reap the rewards. In this story, Cinderella’s mother dies and her father remarries to a woman who has two daughters. While the daughters are pampered, Cinderella must work to keep the house from falling into disrepair. She befriends the animals and they help her to get ready to go to the ball by finishing her chores and making her a dress. When the evil stepsisters discover the dress they become furious because the mice used trimming from their clothing when making the dress. In revenge, the stepsisters rip the dress, leaving Cinderella out of options and out of hope. Just as Cinderella is about to give up, her fairy godmother appears and with a wave of magic creates a dress and turns a pumpkin and the mice into a horse and carriage. The only problem is that everything will turn back to what it was beforehand at midnight. Cinderella and the Prince fall in love at the ball but she must quickly leave because the
Cinderella goes to her mother’s grave and cries about how poorly and inhumanely she is getting treated, she tries satisfying her wicked step-mother, but she is never successful. The Grimm brothers had a different audience to satisfy so their story tone is darker and deeper. Their main concern was for the audience to sympathize with Cinderella and emotionally connect with her.
Wu-Mei struggles about family and relationships. She suffered bullying from her own family. Bullying is the use of force to abuse someone and it has been the problem for Wu-mei from the start which makes her feel unwanted. Her siblings were being aggressive to her because they believe that she was the cause of their mother’s death. There is a quote from the Bible “Do unto others what you want others do unto you” this means that do to others what you want them do to you. In the novel “Chinese Cinderella” Wu Mei is being bullied by her Big Sister by telling her that she is the cause why their mother had died. For e.g. on page 3 chapter 1, Big Sister once said to Wu mei “Mama died giving birth to you. If you had not been born, Mama would still
"Cinderella" is perhaps the most recognized fairy tale in history, one of the few that spans across generations and cultures. Every prominent culture in the world tells some similar version of this story of a poor girl going from rags to riches; over 700 versions have been accounted for worldwide. In America, numerous authors have penned their own version of the classic folktale. One of these is Tanith Lee, a prolific writer of stories for young adults. Lee cleverly found a way to include all of the traditional elements of the classic "Cinderella" tale, but added a new twist: Cinderella, or the character similar to her in this story, had malicious intentions for the prince, and her purpose throughout the tale was a malevolent one: revenge.
The Grimm Brothers version of Cinderella is a written down oral story that people passed down from generation to generation, meant to teach a lesson about piety and good behavior. Before the Grimm Brothers ever wrote it down, the story had been told several times by memory. It is thus not surprising that the descriptions of certain events in the story, such as the way Cinderella went to the Ball, are lacking in details. It is obvious that these parts of the story are unimportant to the overall message of the story. Instead, it focuses on the piety of Cinderella and the wickedness of the step-sisters. Through the events of the story, it becomes obvious that the goodness of Cinderella is justly rewarded, and that
Cinderella is innocent just as the child, and this allows the child to not feel guilt about his jealous judgements towards siblings. Cinderella’s story helps the child realize how terrible things could be for them and to appreciate how lucky they are instead of looking at the negative side of their life.

The high quality text that we chose to work with was The Korean Cinderella written by Shirley Climo and illustrated by Ruth Heller. Shirley climo has ventured to many places learning about different culture and writing classic tales through the story lenses of different cultures. Ruth Heller is a wonderful illustrator. All her drawings for the books she’s illustrated are colorful and vibrant. She has also illustrated for a few of Shirley Climo’s books besides this one. Before illustrating this book, Heller traveled to Korea to do research on her illustrations for this text. The last pages of the book are devoted to both the author’s and illustrator’s notes. Here they discuss why they made certain writing or artistic decisions. Shirley Climo even mentions that she wrote this story based on three different variations of the Korean tale.
In Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah. Ye Ye and Aunt Baba demonstrate their belief in Adeline by always loving and inspiring her. I believe Adeline would not have risen above her abusive childhood without Ye Ye and Aunt Baba. I believe this because both of them practically rose Adeline from when she was a baby.
In the autobiography Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah, the narrator was influenced in many ways by the people around her. One character which influences the narrator’s life to a vast amount was her step-mother Niang. Her Aunt Baba also played a very big part on how Yen Mah turned out in her later and earlier years as well as everywhere in between. Her grandfather Ye-Ye was a constant support to Adeline Yen Mah.
“Chinese Cinderella is the true story of my childhood up to the age of fourteen. It was difficult and painful to write, but I felt compelled to do so”(Mah XI). In the story, Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah, a young girl named Adeline goes through a depressing childhood. She was a disgrace to her family, beat by her parents, and kicked out of her own house. Adeline had always been a disgrace to her family.
Cinderella is a fairytale for children that displayed love, loss and miracles; however, when it is further analyzed, it has a deeper meaning. Cinderella is a story about a young girl who became a servant in her own home after her father remarried a malicious woman with two spoiled daughters. She was humiliated and abused yet she remained gentle and kind. She received help from her fairy godmother to go to the prince’s ball after her stepmother rejected her proposal. Cinderella and the Prince fell madly in love but she had to leave at twelve o’clock and forgot to tell him her name but she left her glass slipper behind. He sent his servants to find her and Cinderella was the only maiden in the kingdom to fit into the shoes. She
“Please believe that one single positive dream is more important than a thousand negative memories.” Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah is a very inspirational story. She has such a rough childhood and yet she pushes through it all. She most definitely never took her problems she had at home out on others, as many do. She never lost hope to leave her family and start a new life. The remarkable book focuses a little girl named Adeline, and she is an unwanted child. She has an abusive stepmother who she calls Niang, which is the Chinese word for “mother.” For her real mother passed away a few days after Adeline was born, all of her siblings blame her for this and says she is bad luck. As for her father he doesn't really even notice her much, nor does he know much about her.
