One reason why there is not enough significant evidence to convict Adnan is that fact that Jay’s testimony was very inaccurate. For one thing, each time Jay testifies he lies, and the cops know it. When he was asked by the detective why he lied about where Hae was killed,
Does Adnan Syed deserve being locked up? Imagine being wrongfully charged for a murder and sentenced to life in prison without being able to talk at all during the trial. Adnan Syed, a normal high school student who was charged with the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee who goes missing on January 13th, 1999 in Baltimore County, Maryland. In the SERIAL podcast, Sarah Koenig (narrator) talks about the alibi, witnesses, interviews, evidence and every detail that exists of the case. Even though state’s prosecution proved Syed guilty, looking at the case after more than 17 years, Syed can still be proven innocent.
From the very first episode, it has been said that there was no physical evidence against Adnan or that he committed the murder. When the detectives would find a possible piece of evidence, there would not be any DNA on it, or there would be no defense for it. For example, the palm print found on the back of the map book found in Hae’s car. The palm print was Adnan’s, however, this is not solid evidence because Adnan was often in her car (Ep. 6). Another example is, Jay’s story and the call log. Jay’s story was the Adnan had given him his cell phone and his car for
Evidence 1 One piece of evidence that supports this theory is the fact that Jay had Adnan’s phone. During the timeframe of the murder a number of calls were made from Adnan’s phone to different people. All these calls made were only to people that Jay knew himself. Jay was in possession of Adnan’s phone before, during and after the 21 minutes in which Hae was murdered. These calls were all in the area of the murder clearly shown by the cell phone tower map. Phone records show calls to and from Jen, one of Jays best friends from high school, who Adnan had only met once or twice whilst with Jay. It doesn’t add up that Adnan would call Jen more than once, before and after the murder if he didn’t know her.
The criminal justice system is meant to protect the innocent, and punish those who are guilty of a crime. However, no system is perfect, and as a result, sometimes the innocent become victims of the system that was meant to protect them. How exactly do these innocent people become victims of the system? Sometimes the person gets framed, and the crime scene is staged to point a finger at them. Sometimes, there is no strong physical evidence against them, yet circumstantial evidence is used by the crown to put them away. This happened to a 17 year old boy named Adnan Syed in Baltimore, Maryland, who was imprisoned for life, for the alleged murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Lee. Throughout the Serial podcast, Sarah Koenig is able to critically analyze information which proves Adnan’s innocence. Firstly, Asia’s letters gave Adnan an alibi for the time of the murder. Secondly, Adnan’s innocence can be demonstrated through the lack of any strong evidence and the prosecution’s use of circumstantial evidence which can be disproved. Thirdly, Jay’s constantly changing testimony is not credible evidence of Adnan’s guilt, making him innocent.
Although I believe adnan is guilty because he killed hae, some may argue he is innocent because he was a good kid. This reason makes sense because he volunteers to help the community. This part of the story is when adnan and his friends are going to say all of the good things he did. Most people in the community are saying that he was a great kid but he still did bad stuff in the low. This proves that he is innocent because most people knows adnan and most people are saying he was a good guy.
“As for physical evidence, there was none--nothing. Apart from some fingerprints in Hae’s car, which Adnan had been in many times, there was nothing linking him to the crime-- DNA, no fibers, no hair, no matching soil from the bottom of his boots,” by Sarah Koenig. Sarah Koenig is saying that Adnan had no real strong evidence to support that he committed the murder. The next piece of evidence addresses his whereabouts by a witness.
Adnan Syed is accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend, and various factors present him as a very likely suspect. Information put together by the state don’t add up, but instead prove he is innocent. Is Adnan guilty or innocent for his ex-girlfriend’s death? In the Serial Podcast, journalist Sarah Koenig discusses the case, committed almost seventeen years ago, and uncovers new evidence that indicates Adnan’s innocence. Adnan Syed has been viewed as a boyfriend, honor roll student, and a murderer. Many described him as a smart, flirtatious, and a likable high schooler. On January 13, 1999, his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, was murdered. Investigators immediately assumed Adnan as the primary suspect because Hae had broken up with him, a month
Jay was a “drug dealer who worked in a porn video store” (Alvim 15). He ran an “operation out of [his] grandmother’s house...had a lot more on the line than just a few bags of weed”(Vargas-Cooper). Indisputably, Jay was a delinquent unlike Adnan, an esteemed Muslim teen referred to as the “community’s golden child”(Zaman 3). The law enforcement’s trust in Jay’s words is inconceivable; Jay is pathological liar and hooligan that has incessantly broken the law. Jay is dishonest even towards his own friend, Jenn. “When [Jenn] asked [Jay] if he was involved in the crime in any way he denie[d] it stating that even though Adnan asked for his help to bury Hae’s body, he did not help him, he only took Adnan somewhere in the city and dropped him off”(Alvim 15). Indeed, Jay seems to be minimizing his participation in the crime in order to protect himself. An innocent man would not have massive inconsistencies in his story. The discrepancies in Jay’s testimony have concealed the truth, causing for the State to have a clouded judgement on the Adnan’s
Adnan is probably innocent because the only solid evidence is Jay’s inconsistent testimony. The first evidence is the police audio when the first audio played jay mentions that he Adnan were at on the mall and the other audio mentions that they were at a different mall. And the second evidence is the court tapes when Adnan lawyer is questioning jay and changes his answers at the moment when jay was at the stage. And last evidence is Jay’s lack of memory because hard to believe that he forgot the day/night that he saw a dead body for the first time (Hae Min Lee’ Body)
Adnan Syed is innocent. I believe this because one, everyone says things that don’t make sense or don’t add up. Two, how could Adnan do this if he cared for Hae as much as he says he does? Three, every time it seems like the blame should fall on Adnan, people doubt that he’s not the one to blame. First, Adnan Syed is innocent in my eyes because all of his witnesses say different things and things that don’t add up. For example, almost all of the witnesses said a lot of “he was probably there”, and “from what I can recall”. Next, Adnan cares and wants the best for Hae, so why would he kill her? Adnan stated that he just wanted her to be happy that’s all he cared about, does that sound like a murder to you? Lastly, there’s too much doubt on
In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s Europe was becoming a tinder box for a possible great war. Every country was extremely determined on spreading their empires. Additionally they began to form alliances, France with England and Germany with Austria-Hungry. Then on June 28th 1914 a Bosnian-Serb nationalist assassinated the
Adnan was a very well liked kid, he was involved in sports, semed very well liked by his classmates, and was even the homecoming king. There were many times his classmates and others were asked about him and almost all had good things to say. “He was like the community golden child” one classmate said. Asia McClain says she remembers Adnan being some good guy, and he seemed to care about Hae, but was not super angry or upset about the breakup. Which the state said was possibly a motive for Adnan wanting to kill Hae. They tried to paint a picture of Adnan being super
The Mysterious Trial The case of Adnan Syed became very popular after the journalist Sarah Koenig made a podcast with her group and collected all the information that related to Syed’s case. Sarah and her team made many interviews with Syed’s friends and the people who related to the case. The trial convicted that Syed had killed his ex-girlfriend. Many of Syed’s friends believe that Syed is not guilty. Also, many people who did not personally know Syed and read the case about him think he was not guilty. Other people see he involved in the case, so he is guilty. There are many doubts about the court's decision to imprison Syed lifetime. These doubts made this case mysterious. Syed may be not guilty if the detective, prosecutor, and the jury
