Adolescence Within Developing Countries

UNICEF defines adolescents to be a group of people from the age of ten to nineteen Adolescents are grouped into three specific categories, early adolescents from age ten to thirteen, middle adolescents from age fourteen to sixteen, and late adolescents from age seventeen to nineteen. The definition of adolescent changes between organizations and governments often reaching to as high an age as twenty-one years old. Adolescents account for 1.2 billion people, and nine out of ten adolescents live within a developing nations. This is primarily due to increased maternal care for recent generations, lack of sexual education, and a difficult financial environment. Although adolescents are of the same age, their geographic location leads to vastly different life experiences and motivations. Within Developing Nations: Adolescences within developing nations are very different than their counterparts within the developed world. Most adolescents within developing nations have minimal access to education past primary school, and are often pulled from formal education to work. Unfortunately, many children express the interest to continue education, but the promise of a paycheck or the aid needed back at home, outweighs the importance for education. An eight year old miner stating he would go to school “if I find someone to support me, because my parents can’t”.
