With this project I proposed to portray teen angst in its raw form. Adolescent angst is often overlooked as a part of growing up, and overlooking it leaves a person to suffer needlessly. This project is an attempt to shine a light on an ever-growing epidemic, teen anxiety. I chose to do this by photographing teenagers who have or continue to suffer from the various symptoms of teen anxiety, including mental disorders, eating disorders, low self-esteem, anger, and depression.
As a psychology major and as somebody who suffered from anxiety and depression in adolescence, it was extremely important to show these emotions authentically. To do that, I used primarily theatre students who could not only connect to these emotions but also act them
It is not uncommon to hear stories about a teenager experiencing mood swings and rebelling against those in authority. Nor is it uncommon to experience general sadness or anxiety in high school and college. However, it is often difficult to tell the difference between normal teenage angst and clinical depression. It is not commonly known that there has recently been a staggering rise of depression in adolescents. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, one in twelve adolescents in the United States suffer from depression, which is 8.3 % of the teenage population. In order to combat the problem of adolescent depression, it is essential that parents take an active role in their adolescent’s life by both acknowledging and
The pieces I chose to analyse were the film ‘Over the Garden Wall’, directed by Nate Cash and ‘More than just the Disease’, written by Bernard MacLaverty. These two pieces explore the topic of Teen Angst in varying ways. Cash and MacLaverty both establish their core theme as teenage anxiety throughout their texts and their protagonist’s actions. In ‘Over the Garden Wall’, Wirt is the older brother of Greg. Wirt is the protagonist of the film and is a pessimistic realist who is easily scared; Greg on the other hand is an overly energetic young boy who is always seen to be unconcerned in the face of danger and always remaining positive, if not oblivious, throughout the film. The brothers meet a very irritable bluebird named Beatrice along their quest to escape the ‘unknown forest’ by travelling across the land to find the woman Adelaide, who can undo the curse and show the brothers the way home. In ‘More than just the Disease’, Neil, the protagonist is a boy who is afflicted with psoriasis and overcome with insecurities because of this. He lacks

Misery in youngsters is an exceedingly genuine medicinal issue that prompts durable sentiments of distress alongside the lost enthusiasm for once delighted in exercises. Teenager dejection influences the way a youngster considers, feels, carries on, and can prompt passionate, useful, and physical issues. There is a wealth of high points and low points engaged with being an understudy. Weight from peers, desires of high scholarly accomplishment, or hormones related with pubescence will normally bring out emotional episodes. Disregarding that, adolescents who have clinical gloom will feel the wretchedness as more than a transitory state. Young wretchedness can prompt extreme results and needs deep-rooted treatment. It is trusted that melancholy is caused by various hereditary, physical, ecological variables interplaying with various hazard factors. Misery tends to keep running in families. How has your teen adjusted at 14-16 years of age to typical adolescent issues such as risk-taking, drugs, alcohol, and sexual interests, and how have you responded to your teen? Describe some specific ways in which your child developed that appeared to be influenced by factors outside your control, such as genes, random environmental events, or the general influence of contemporary middle-class American culture.

With school work, and social interaction. In our society, many people diagnose themselves with anxiety, because they are nervous, they believe they have an anxiety disorder. For the past eleven years, I have been involved with an after-school theatre program called Drama Kids of Nassau County. From the beginning, I loved acting because it allowed me to be creative. My favorite acting activity is improvisation. Often, my teacher will provide information, such as a line of dialogue or a prop, and I must act out a scene using the information. In these activities, I use my imagination to create a new world and become someone else. I have received not only pleasure from acting, but also self confidence and public speaking
Adolescent aggression is becoming an ever-increasingly serious social and mental issue in today’s world. A large body of research had been done by Western scholars to indicate that low socioeconomic status (SES) was strongly associated with high adolescent aggression. The researchers of the current study wanted to verify many of the findings by using a large sample of test subjects from a metropolitan area in Pakistan. Additionally, they wanted to study the mechanism through which SES determined adolescent aggression, specifically, the mediational role of “Executive Functioning” (EF) between SES and adolescent aggression. “Executive functioning” was defined as a combination of problem solving and flexibility of thinking abilities. They had
Jashuko Kwong-Roshi states that “original mindfulness is the actualization of humanity’s inherent basic goodness, it is creatively joined with the new therapies and offers a stream of helping and compassionate services for something very old (Rappaport, 2013, p.1). The North American Drama Therapy Association defines drama as the “intentional use of drama, and or theater process to achieve therapeutic goals (North American Drama Association, 2016). Drama therapy is both experiential and active, this particular approach to therapy can provide the context for the participants to tell their stories, set goals, solve problems, express feelings or achieve catharsis “unlike talk therapy, drama therapy gets there at a rapid pace. Role playing, which allows one to act out issues and problems is reportedly more effective than talking (Landy, 2016). Mindfulness Meditation serves as a compliment to drama therapy, and many of the skills sets and approaches that are developed through the form of art can actually be utilized in everyday life. Skills such as concentration, acceptance, openness, and loving-kindness are each contributors to the body of drama therapy work as well as the overall effectiveness of the therapy (Rappaport, 2013, p. 27).
We have been watching the in-school performances for the Drama Theatre Arts classes every year since eighth grade. To be apart of what I saw on stage was certainly a compelling experience. Being in Drama Club, I understood what I was getting myself into. It was great to still being with students like Nora and Alyssa who had a passion for theatre, but I also had to work with people who aren’t as into performing on stage. Theatre is a collaborative effort. Each group project provided an internal struggle in the group. Either someone didn’t know their lines, was uncomfortable on stage, or was just hard to work with. I often found myself trying to hold a group together and solving their problems. I know I’m going to experience people like in the theatre world, so I am glad I have experience in group thinking in an environment where I'm not
The article “Why Teenagers Act Crazy," by Richard A. Friedman provides an extensive examination of the subject of anxiety in adolescents. Friedman’s article is written from the perspective of a doctor who has studied teenagers’ minds. (Friedman, 2014). The focus of this article is the way the average teenager’s mind works and thinks. For a very long time, there has been a mixture of questions concerning the teenage. In contrast to both children and adults, teenagers have a great degree of susceptibility to the idea that they are different and have the drive of articulating their real characters. (Friedman, 2014). However teenagers are always attempting to discover who they really are. Friedman’s article just like the lecture notes on the adolescent concurs that adolescents face much greater anxiety and fear while also encountering more difficult time learning how not be afraid as compared to both children and adults
Adolescence is a stage of maturation between childhood and adulthood that denotes the period from the beginning of puberty to maturity. However, many conflicting opinions are raised about weather such a stage of childhood is influenced by stress, depression, and suicide rate. Some people support the optimistic view that says that adolescence is not a period of storm and stress. Others, including me, support an opposite pessimistic view which characterizes adolescence as a period of stress and inner turmoil. Unfortunately, it has been recently proved that depression is a growing problem in today 's society and a major contributing factor for a multitude of adolescent problems. This is because , as research indicates, adolescent depression
I started this course without an accurate idea of what acting really is. I noted in my manifesto how I like to pick up traits and joke ideas from characters from TV shows which did not apply to my acting experience. I did note that it is difficult to express emotion is a real way even though it is not there. I wanted to be able to dig deep into my past emotions but it was too difficult. I made the chose to take this course because I knew it was would be something I could use in my future.
Teenage is a fundamental stage of life that each human being passes through. Some people face this period of their life strongly and positively, while others face many problems and difficulties. This depends on the environment these young adults live in, their parents, their friends, their living conditions, their education, and many other factors.
