Obesity causing depression on adolescents is an important topic because depressive symptoms are the beginning phase to depression. These young adults who are clinically obese feel like outsiders and do not feel like they belong in society’s norm. They suffer from daily teasing and put-downs and from other kids because of what they physically look like. Their weight causes them to be rejected from others as well as themselves. Having this happen day after day will lead to a feeling of hopelessness and gradually leading to the early stages of depression. This is a serious turning point because once one becomes depressed they tend to lose their sense of self efficacy. Then which latently leads one to hurt their body even more through eating

Major depressive disorder is characterized by a myriad of symptoms that interferes with a person's daily activities including ability to work, sleep, study, eat, and enjoy once-pleasurable activities. Major depression is defined as a severe depression that comes on suddenly and seems to have no external cause, or it is too severe for current circumstances. This is a mood disorder which causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Some of the moods they may occur is boredom, inability to feel pleasure, loneliness, and emotional distress. Cognitive symptoms may be lack of concentration or thoughts of suicide, and some behavioral symptoms may consist of excessive crying or social isolation. There may also be a sleeping issue when depressed, such as excessive sleepiness or insomnia.

Death by suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people from 15 to 25 years of age, and more than 90 percent of suicides are associated with a psychological disorder, with depression being the most likely cause(Hyman & Cohen, 2013; National Institute of Mental Health, 2008).

The need to fit in is a major factor to adolescent depression. When children move towards adolescence, they become more involved with their peers. This is when teens begin to “discover” the world. This is when peer pressure comes into place. Not all peer pressure can be bad. Some can be pressuring others to do positive things with their lives. Depression a word we’re familiar with especially when it comes to adults, we know adults get depress and we understand the reasons, with the high demands in life it’s not uncommon to get lost in the shuffle. Depression in adult is something we have known for many years, but what has surprised many of us is that adolescents also get depressed. I myself still don’t fully understand the reasons why or how this happens. I see it very often adolescent coming in to the ER because they are depressed and want to hurt themselves, and each and every single time I’m shock.
