Kohut through 1939 Living in Germany during the Weimar Republic and then having to deal with the uprising of power of Hitler, was an experience that changed many lives of everyday German citizens. Thomas Kohut’s book, A German Generation, analyzes a group of interviewees that grew up and lived during this time period. After World War I, Germany was in a state of heartbreak, but for many of the children going through the war, they recall it as, “not as a time of anxiety and hardship but as an idyllic period in their lives” (Kohut 39). However, the Weimar Republic was certainly a time of disorder and chaos for Germany. The older groups recall memories they have of the defeat they faced and the revolution in Germany as, “vivid and
Is it a coincidence that Hitler and the Nazis increased their popularity, while the Weimar Republic decreased their spot in Germany’s government? The only reason the Nazi Party increased their popularity was because the Weimar Republic made Germany become distressed and also the Young Plan of 1928 contributing to the Nazis gaining 18% in the 1930 Reichstag elections. Therefore, Germany began panicking which led Hitler to gain power, Germany created the Weimar Constitution to drive Germany out of this economic downfall, and the League of Nations created the Treaty of Versailles to force Germany to harsh terms and which ultimately led Hitler and the Nazi Party to take control of the German government.
Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany turned Germany’s gloomy future into a bright one. Before Hitler claimed power over Germany, the country that was struggling during the Weimar Republic (1919 – 1933) with problems such as the Treaty of Versailles. The treaty forced Germany to hand over reparations for the events of World War 1. Conditions would only get worse for Germany during the Weimar Republic’s control of Germany. In 1923 Germany could no longer afford to pay back the reparations for the treaty, meaning that the country dug deeper into debt. Germany now relied on money from overseas, especially the United States. In 1929 the Wall Street Stock Market crashed, beginning the Great Depression.
The Third Reich rose from the ashes of the Weimar Republic, which was a parliamentary democracy established after the fall of the Kaiser at the end of World War 1. In an article published by the United States Holocaust museum the end of the Republic is result of the rise of the Nazis. The Weimar Republic fell thanks to a string of events that resulted in Adolf Hitler’s establishment as Fuhrer. The beginning of the end for the Republic was upon the appointment of Adolf Hitler as chancellor on January 30, 1933. Before the Nazi party came into power, Germany was ruled by the Weimar Republic, a democracy led by President Hindenburg. Under this rule, Germans had a lot more freedom and rights in their life. In 1923, after World War I, France had forced Germany to sign the Treaty of Versailles, which stated that they must pay back reparations, give land and take the blame. From a speech by Sir Geddes in 1918 said, “Germany is going to pay….The Germans should hand over
