This child’s parents have lost custody of their child because they have been deemed unfit to raise the child, either because of neglect or abuse. After the child is removed from the horrible situation, he or she is taken by child services and placed in a foster home or with a family member. The average child is born into a loving family in the United States, but the other six percent are not so lucky. Some children in today’s world are unfortunate enough to be born into unfit families. Many of these children are thrown into foster care and taken away from these “families”. A serious debate in today’s society is whether or not foster care is a safe for children, or a trap.

The only problem, that occurred while on the initial visit to the prospective foster carer, was how long the process takes to become a foster carer. It was explained on the visit, that the next step would be skills to foster course. However, the nearest course was fully booked and so the prospective foster carer would have to wait for the next available course. Overall, the process could take up to 1 year, however the prospective foster carer believed she could foster sooner. This was the only difficulty for the prospective foster carer and the social worker, as they cannot speed up the process even though the foster carer has substantial potential.

Out of every short-term foster parent I’ve had in the past two years, Venus was the one person who had the biggest impact on my life. In the beginning, Venus was very generous and claimed she was my birth mother. Everybody needs a family, even older children in foster care waiting for adoption. Teenagers are less likely than young children to get fostered or adopted, because everyone wants the perfect young child. More people should foster and adopt older children and teenagers, because it positively impacts the lives of the youth, family, and society. Children in foster care go through harsh things in life and need the love and support from a foster or adoptive parent. Not only does fostering or adopting older children change their lives but it also impacts the lives of the people parenting them. Society is positively impacted by teenagers being fostered or adopted.

This has caused me to want to further research the issue. What are the social and emotional effects that adoption has on children?
