With the rapidly development of English, English becomes a lingua franca in the world. English language is spoken by over1.5billion people around the world (“Mufwene, S.”, 2010). Non-native speakers are far outnumber of native-English speakers which means that many people who come from different backgrounds and different native language are using English as a common language for communication(“Mufwene, S.”, 2010). In other words, English have an important position today; it affects more and more people use it as a common channel for communication or in the aspect of sharing academic information. Before becoming an expert or a professional in the areas, people must learn lots of knowledge. Then we can say in this way, if the expertise is used in English, of course we need to learn in English first; it is another reason of the trend. All around the world, some schools choose English immersion in order to help students connect to the whole world. The first reason is that there are many different kinds of knowledge present in the world. It’s hard to translate all of them and without making confuse between information, so that students may receive some wrong information. Besides, many non-English speaking countries implement English education, such as China. Children start to learn English when they are in kindergarten in China. (“Clarissa, W., Enjoli, F.” 2010). People not only learning English in their countries, they are also studying abroad. There are over 750,000 foreign students staying in US for studying abroad, (“Pike, C.”, 2013) and over 430,000 choose UK (“Pike, C.”, 2013). English become that language they need. This trend also affects people become a global citizen. Many basic words, such as "OK, "Hello", "Yes" and so on, which is some very common words using in answer question or greet somebody who come from different culture and speaking different languages. Therefore, English become a language for them as a kind of lingua franca to adapt the local live and communicate with people. English infiltrate into society more widely and deeply, people are more likely to become a global citizen who can communicate to the global world because of using English. People don’t have to worry about the language barrier. One example is the global tourism. In the past, language barrier maybe affected a person whether he or she was planning to travel other countries. If people want to travel that places, it will means that you have to learn the local language. But now, English can solve this problem, not only useful for those countries which are used English, but also the others such as Japan, Korea. It happens on all countries in the world (“N.P.”, 2013). In addition, wherever you want to travel, study abroad, business trip and so on, airport probably is a way station that bring you to the place where you want to go. “Intrinsic arguments describe the English language as providential, rich, noble and interesting. Such arguments tend to assert what English is and what other languages are not”. As mentioned previously, notwithstanding that the english language is widely-spoken around the world, diversity is important and for many individuals language is the basis of their culture. Making english the global language is essentially
English language becomes a part of our life in various aspects such as business, education, economic, social culture and others. As we known that our country is one of favorite destination for the tourists and the language that we use to communicate with them is English language which is widely spoken. Since English has influent in our life and it still have problems in both teachers and students. The main reason that we always have heard from the others is we have our own language, we can communicate with other people in country easily so, it is unnecessary to learn other language. It is wrong idea of those people, but the true reason maybe come from our teaching approach that different areas also
English has become the most widespread and powerful language on Earth. The imperial English Empire spread English across the globe; from America to Asia. English’s position in the world was cemented by US cultural and diplomatic dominance; evident in American movies, fast food, and clothing. English has proven it is not moving anywhere anytime soon, as English only grows in use over time. Thus a debate has arisen: Should English be the official Universal Language? On one hand, English can harm other cultures, international relations, and scientific development; however, English is very flexible and widely used, making it the perfect candidate for a global language.
Some people even believe that English is global language because 80% of the internet content uses the medium of English to communicate with the internet users and some other evidences. Although these arguments are valid, they don’t make English as the global language. In this article, Ms. Wallraff has responded to such people who are ignorant of the facts about universality of English language and have firm belief that English is

English as we know it is indeed the dominant language, but does that mean everyone should learn it? Should English be the global language? Should you have to know English to communicate if you are someone that lives in a place where the native language is something different? The answer is no. However, first you must consider the statement “It is a fact that English is the dominant language in the world today. Everyone, in every country, in order to participate in the modern world, should learn English. After all, a language is just a random collection of words, so how hard can it be”. Personally, I believe it is tremendously difficult to learn a new language as an adult, but in order to make the world go round, we all should know more than one language; no one language should rule. Barbara Wallraff, David Crystal, and John Tagliabue share a few words that connect to the statement to show their personal mindset behind English being a global language. In this essay, I will extract statements from each of the authors that explain their views on a global language to support my overall perception.
Non-native language particularly English, which is a Lingua franca- a language that is adopted as a common language between speakers whose native languages are different, is often preferred to native language in the medium of instruction in higher education in many places like Hong Kong and Singapore, according to Interim report April 2014 of “English as a medium of Instruction – a growing Global phenomenon: phase 1” by British Council and University of Oxford mentioned in the Week 11 lecture PowerPoint. By using English medium teaching, students and university institutions would be benefited. This essay will argue that English should be adopted as the medium of language in tertiary education, and it is supported by the discussion of the pros and cons of using non-native language in tertiary education in the perspective of students and university
On planet earth, there are a lot of smart animals and primates, however, none of them can talk to each other in the way that human beings do. The biggest distinction between humans and animals, is language (The Children of the Code Project, 2012). Language is a shared symbolic system, it is a means to expressing ideas and concepts, it is inquisitive, and it is also the link between the past and the future (Woolfolk & Margetts, 2013, p. 97). Language consists of groups and combinations of words and is the prime means of communication between humans (Fellowes & Oakley, 2014, p. 17). Many linguists question whether language is a naturally inherited process, or whether it emerges and develops through instruction. Others however, like Noam Chomsky, an American linguist and cognitive scientist, believe that with more than 4000 languages existing today, some are too complex to the learned through formal instruction and that children possess an inborn “language acquisition device” (O'Donnell et al., 2016, p. 127). Chomsky believed that language is made of words, nouns, verbs and subsequently, the rules on how those are moved around for example syntax and grammar (O'Donnell et al., 2016, p. 127); this is also known as a cognitive phenomenon (Gee & Hayes, 2011, p. 6). During his / her career, a teacher will have in the classroom a vast variety of students with diverse linguistic backgrounds, and it is imperative that educators use language as the social bridge that connects his /
As English continues to progress within the world, global culture has created an atmosphere where all can communicate and understand one another’s culture. In the United States, English becoming the official language has created unison and thorough communication within the entire country. It has created a gateway for people to comprehend and converse with
“One out of four of the world’s population speaks English to some level of competence” (NADRAG, TIHENEA, and STAN, 2013). It is well known that English is a globally used language and holding balance internationally, but after all how can we ‘dig deeper’ into it? Although undisputedly English is today’s international lingua franca, the comprehension of globalization of the English language of its historical origin, further consequences (to other non-English speaking nations), and trend of benefit with disadvantage might come more important than the language itself as it is practically being used daily and globally.
Nowadays we are living in the age of globalization and as a result anything produced or invented in any part of the world gets global character very rapidly. To keep pace with globalization, it is very much essential to learn the global language English. English has a grip as the language of the global world, and being so it has become the most commonly learnt second language amongst foreign language speakers. English is the most commonly taught second language in foreign schools, as English is the collective language spoken by 1.8 billion people world wide, 27% of the world’s population. (Lona Glenn & Maria Castle, 2011).A vast majority of non-native English learners study a wide variety of school subjects using a language that is not their

In this paper, I argue if our modern-day society needs a global language such as English. English as a global language is necessary because it is more efficient, globalization, and most people already have some knowledge of English. English is of great importance in many places around the world, for this reason, it would be an excellent candidate to be the world’s lingua franca, or a global language.
A global language is a language that is spoken internationally and used for communication between people with different mother tongue. It is a language which is common as a first or a second language that many people speak or understand. English is one of the most common global languages and it has evolved naturally. It is used and understood in different degrees by over a billion people, and it seems like it’s spreading more and more.
