Unit 7 Writing: Use of Technology for Conversations 1. I personally would rather have a conversation with someone in person. I like being able to focus on the person I am talking to and see their facial reactions to what I am saying. If I can’t see their face, I feel like I am lacking the ability to fully listen to everything they have to say. In person I can also see if the person I’m having a conversation with is listening to me as well.
Face to face relationships are very important because through contact we are getting live interaction, trust, honesty, and integrity. Face to face conversations are more positive and more reliable than friendships online. In cyber space you convers ate with friends but some will not acknowledge the friendship in public. Social media is slowly taking away from face to face relationships, because we contact our family and friends on the computer screen. We are typing while looking at the screen instead of seeing facial expressions. Therefore, we aren’t sure if they are interpreting what we are saying in a negative or positive way.
The way to prevent these challenges is to have a communication plan in place before the implementation i.e. during the planning phase. During scope planning, when the WBS (Work Breakdown Structure) is created, the resources or stakeholders for each task are created. At the same time, a communication plan needs to be created to ensure communication with these stakeholders about meetings, status updates, etc.
Communication is one of the most important and valuable skills we have developed as human beings. It is the basis for how we connect with each other globally and shape the people we are today. For the greatest success of the business, employees need interpersonal communication to connect with their co-workers. A leadership expert, John C. Maxwell (2010) says: “Connecting goes beyond words.” (p. 41). Physically being in the same room, verbally speaking thoughts, engaging in eye contact, and being able to see nonverbal responses are all important and add to a person’s understanding of the message being communicated and feeling a connection. Overall, communicating face-to-face is more natural for employees. An employee knows who is hearing what they are saying and seeing their nonverbal gestures. The employee can either get immediate feedback whether or not the person understands or agrees or disagrees. The communication does not have to be formatted as it does on paper. An employee should still present themselves professionally, but communicating face-to-face is a process, instead of format.
