Aminoglycosides are used for serious infections due to gram negative bacilli. Structurally they have two aminosugars linked to hexose nucleus through glycosidic linkage. Aminoglycosides are obtained from Streptomyces or Micromonospora species. Aminoglycosides are highly polar and hence are not absorbed by oral route. All aminoglycosides resemble in their pharmacokinetic properties. They will not penetrate into the central nervous system and normally administered topically, intravenously, intramuscularly or intrathecally. Most of the parenteral aminoglycosides are excreted as such in urine. Aminoglycosides may cause ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity and neuromuscular blockade on long term
