Managing forty-plus students is not a task, especially if they are college students. In every residential hall at University of California Riverside there are residential advisors. Residential advisors are students that are responsible for a hall and the residents that live there. Their overall duties include hall maintenance, being on duty, keeping a good relationship with residents, caring for themselves, setting up the hall calendar along with events and being on good academic standing. What being on duty means is that the residential advisor that is on duty must go through every hall and check the emergency exit door at the end of the hall and turn off the hall lights. However, that not the only thing that they do, they also make sure …show more content…
She called those halls “the crazy hall”. This kind of made her hesitant because she did not want her hall to end up like that. To make sure that students were going to respect her and follow the rules she wanted to come off as super laid off, nice and cool. However, she also wanted to have the respect of the students and not be taken advantage her. She wanted to be a mentor to the students first and then be their friend. She’s held other leadership positions and the previous experience has helped with being an residental …show more content…
The most difficult task of being an residential advisor is having to document people for housing policy violations. The most common documentation is alcohol related, it difficult to document students because she does not want to get people in trouble but it is part of her job. Being a college student she knows that people are going to drink and get drunk but if they bring back to the hall she has to document them. The worst according to her are the residents that give her a hard time because she has to constantly enforce the rules to them. She hates to constantly enforce the rules because it makes her seem like a buzzkill. Being on duty is one was the most laborious things that she has to do because it takes up a lot of
As a resident assistant, I upheld and am continuing to uphold University Housing’s mission of ensuring affordable, comfortable, secure housing on campus while promoting the academic success and personal growth of the residents. From crisis management to programming for the community, my responsibilities varied to be an enforcer of the policies but also to be a friend to all. I built quality relationships with each of my residents to establish an authentic community among the diverse population. Whether it was simply helping
At my graduate assistantship at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), the graduate students from Monmouth were introduced to a few of the key offices that work with Residential Education and Housing. Through this introduction, I was able to meet Kelly Hennessy, who is the current Associate Dean of Students in the Department of Health and Wellness at The College of New Jersey. As a future Student Affairs professional, one of my end goals would ultimately become a Dean of Students, so it was exciting to interview Hennessy and see how she got to where she is today. Originally when Hennessy first started her college years, she thought that she wanted to be a teacher. After working with the professionals in her Residence Life Office and Leadership Office at the University of Buffalo, where she received both her bachelors and master’s degrees, she realized that her passion was no longer teaching, but rather to become the professionals she was surrounded and inspired by every day. Hennessy has worked in Residence Life for majority of her career up to about two years ago when the Department of Health and Wellness first started on TCNJ’s campus.
First and foremost, I think that it is most important for a Resident Advisor to be open and able to keep the peace within the resident’s hall. Whether it be dealing with roommate difficulties, confronting inappropriate behavior, or dealing with
In my senior year of high school, I became the student body Vice President and discovered what it means to be an influential leader on campus. This experience exposed me to develop an array of qualities that can be utilized in the role of being resident assistants (RA). I have gained insightful knowledge of the intricate details necessary to be a productive leader who guides in an encouraging and supportive way. A gift that I posses is my ability to organize creative and innovative ways to build camaraderie among the people I serve. This is crucial and beneficial because it ensures for a safe and welcoming environment where everyone feels confident to seek assistance when needed. As a representative of this university and myself, I bring a dedicated intensity about infusing change by vocalizing the wants, needs, and concerns of the students to make my school resilience to an environment conducive to learning.
I had the absolute honor of meeting and interviewing the wonderful Isis Howard, a Residential Advisor in PCV 1. Isis, a 2nd year Environmental Management and Protection major, greeted me with a smile which led me to immediately feel comfortable around her. Isis had several personal motivations for why she chose to become a RA; ranging from personal growth and gaining useful life skills, such as communication, honesty, and leadership, to giving back to the Cal Poly community. One point brought up that resigned with me was that her transition to living on her own had been difficult, but her RAs were there for her every step of the way. Their efforts to create a sense of home in an unfamiliar environment truly motivated her to become a RA. Now that Isis has received the job, she mentions she receives the benefits that she hoped for from the beginning everyday- she continues to develop skills in a wide range of areas that deem valuable for life.
As a DC-CAP College Representative I will advocate on campus centered on the relationship I have established with Housing and Residence Life throughout the years. Currently, I am a Resident Advisor (RA) and a member of Residence Hall Association (RHA) both concerning housing. My role as an RA is to foster the community, provide academic support, being attentive to safety and security of the residents, and to serve as an overall counselor to the residents. Also, as an RA I develop programs that educate and encourage residents to build relationships. Furthermore, as a member of RHA my role is to develop residence hall policies, programs, and be the voice for all residence hall students and address the concerns of all the residents.
I am applying to be a Resident Advisor to be able to get the opportunity to be apart of the East Carolina welcoming committee for new students moving in. I want to help make sure that the students staying in the dorms are safe and comfortable with their living arrangements. As a freshman, I know that living away from home and starting college can be tough. I want to be able to create a home away from home for them to feel comfortable in. I communicate effectively, I am approachable, and a leader. These qualities I say best describe me as a person. By having great communication skills it will help me as an RA to effectively communicate to people that live in the dorms about rules and regulations. Also by having great communication skills, I
Student affairs is charged with finding the resources needed to better services, programs, student learning experience, and the teaching of technology to students (Jones, et all, 2011, p.539). In 1890 LeBarron Russell Brigs was appointed dean of men, the first dean appointed. Briggs’s duties as the first dean of men was dealing with student issues. As colleges developed into more than just a place for students to learn the dean of men’s role had changed, the role became focused on helping students to become more rounded in not only education but, help them to become better citizens, and to teach students to have a better social and moral foundation. There are several major roles of student affairs, helping in retention of students, learning
As a MSW student at a long term care home, I get an opportunity to take on many duties and activities. For starters, I get to do a lot of administration work including filing, faxing, photocopying, writing thank you letters for those who came for the tour of the home, mailing care conference letters to families to let them know when it is and making phone calls to family members as well as different agencies such as Community Care Access Centre (CCAC). One of the main duties and most important I find is visiting residents and addressing any concerns they may have. This can include issues that they may be experiencing with another resident and connecting them with different services such as Amy’s Helping Hands and transportation services. To

The three most frequent and major responsibilities for a successful Resident Advisor are availability, communication, and awareness. Availability, being there when your residents need it, is important because it presents you as someone that they can rely on and who will always be there when they need it. Communication, creating an environment where both myself and the residents are comfortable sharing questions and concerns, is important because the only way to assist a resident is to know what’s going on and without communication you will not know what your residents need. Awareness, knowing what is happening around you, is important because there will be times when residents don’t want you to know something or are doing something that they shouldn’t be.
After graduating college in 2011, I was happy to find my first job working with foster and homeless youth as a residential counselor, not knowing exactly what to expect.
When paying large amounts of money, most people like to get the most out of what they pay for. Students all across the country pay thousands of dollars to live on campus housing in educational institutions. At Valdosta State University, there are nine residential halls on campus with most of them being freshman dorms. The on-campus housing follows a strict policy that states only two people can be checked in per student. Many students agree that there should be more than two people who are allowed to check in at any of the given halls here on campus. The dorms should allow at least four people to be checked in at a time by each resident student. There could be a cap to the capacity at four, but that is a reasonable number as to how many people can come hangout in each dorm.
Residential Advisors—People who work in residential communities can provide services to residents. They need to keep and organize the house records and assign house. They need to provide basic service to residents like maintenance, organize activities, provide repairs and furnishing. Residential advisors can help residents to involve in the community quickly. I found that residential advisors are very busy, they need to do lots of things every day. To be a good RA, you must have Oral presentation ability, organization talent and communication talent.
