Describe the advantages and disadvantages of magnetic storage, optical storage, and solid state storage using criteria such as versatility, durability, capacity, access time, and transfer rate. Computers use many different types of mediums for the storage of data. The three most common forms of computer storage include magnetic storage, optical storage, and solid state storage. Each of these storage mediums has its own specific purpose. They are all different, and come with their own set of advantages in limitations. Magnetic storage is a storage medium that stores data by magnetizing particles on a disk or tape. The most common types of magnetic storage are being floppy disks, magnetic tape, and computer hard drives. The advantages that come with magnetic storage include permanent storage and flexibility of editing storage files. Hard drives are cheap to make and offer high speed accessibility. The disadvantages for magnetic storage include susceptibility to error and low portability. Optical storage is a storage medium that stores data as microscopic light and dark spots on a disk. One advantage of this storage medium is that the disk is not susceptible to humidity, magnets, and dust. Additionally, optical storage is non-volitale. On disadvantage is that it requires special drives to read and write. Additionally, optical storage is expensive and is not easily and safely rewritable.
