Advantages And Disadvantages Of Multi Stream Segregation System

Good Essays
2. DIFFERENT WASTE SEGREGATION & COLLECTION SYSTEMS
2.1 METHODS OF WASTE SEGREGRATION
There are mainly two ways for waste segregation
1. Single stream waste separation
2. Multi-stream waste separation
Single stream (SS) waste recycling
This method is also known as fully commingled or single-sort waste separation system. In Single stream sorting the waste generator places recyclables in a single commingled container which is then collected together transported to a single stream material recycling facility (MRF). Materials at MRF are sorted by hand sorting, sensors, magnets, and gravity.

Advantages
1. Increased recycling participation
The households do not need to invest time on sorting waste. Placing all recyclable materials in same bin makes

Higher collection costs
Multi-stream recycling systems are supposed to have much higher collection cost because of the compartment truck. The loading and unloading of recyclable materials takes more time as well.
2. Reduced levels of household participation
The waste generators are requested to put wastes into right bin. As it takes more time to sort wastes, people tend to participate less in recycling.

For single stream recycling to work, the processing facility must sort the recyclable materials properly and thoroughly to meet market specifications. Also single stream is claimed to collect more quantity of recyclables. What really matters is not just the quantity, but the quality of materials. With contaminated materials, lower quality end products with higher production costs are generated. Source separated waste stream higher up waste hierarchy which on the other hand almost difficult in mixed waste stream.

2.2 DIFFERENT COLLECTION SYSTEMS
1. Door-to-door separate collection systems
All recyclables sorted in different bags, bins, containers collected directly at households with regular frequency
2. Door-to-door Co-mingled collection
Almost similar to the above, but different waste fractions are collected in the same
