Throughout African countries, 16,000 babies and children are dying daily. This statistic is equivalent to eleven deaths occurring every minute, and these devastating numbers continue to increase yearly. However, catastrophic statistics in Africa can simply be decreased if hospitals utilize a baby hat mechanism called the Neopenda. Additionally, more than one million babies are currently dying the day they were born each year. Millions of babies die every year in Uganda, therefore the Neopenda device should be implemented to decrease this tragic problem.
The Neopenda device is an efficient solution that will decrease the infant mortality rate in Uganda when used. Aulenor Abebe Ngiste states, “This baby hat is wearable technology-it contains a device that tracks the four vital signs nurses use to identify babies in distress: heart rate, respiratory rate, blood oxygen saturation, and temperature” (1). The African region as a whole has a total of eleven nurses, midwives, and doctors per 10,000 people, which is an incredibly low number of physicians. In order for a baby to survive, it must be provided with specific necessities such as being fed. However, because babies cannot express when they are in distress or need something to be done, the baby could simply be left alone and may possibly die. With the Neopenda, the hat can warn nurses if something is wrong
