Today children are practically born with an electronic device. From a very young age, children are taught how to use technology for entertaining and educational purposes. Some kids seem to understand technology better than some adults. According to a 2010 newsroom from the America Academy of Pediatrics, “children and adolescent spend more time with the media than they do in other activity except for sleeping. The vast majority of young people have access to a bedroom television, computer, the Internet, a video game console, and cellphone”. Although, this can be a great advantage for children it can also be a great disadvantage.

The biggest negative effect of the media and one of the most common is violence. According to a 2016 Kids Health article, “the average American child will witness about 200,000 violent acts on television by age 18”. And this is not counting violent video games or violent videos on social media. The National Institute of Mental Health conducted some research where they identified the following three major effects of seeing violence in television: “Children may become less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others, children may be more fearful of the world around them, and children may be more likely to behave in aggressive or harmful ways towards other”. This research was based on the work of the psychologist Albert Bandura who studied social learning and the tendency of children to imitate what they see in the 1970s. The problem with violence is that television and movies often convey a model of conflict resolution. The hero resolves the conflict with violence and they get rewarded for their behavior. Then, these heroes become children role models and children start thinking that is “cool” for them to act in violent and harmful ways towards the bad guys. Another problem that the excessive use of the media creates is obesity. Health experts have long linked too much screen time to obesity.
