Abstract- Thermoset materials can be replaced by cross linkable thermoplastic materials meeting the desirable properties of thermoset. The paper describes about the process parameters, cross linking process and its advantages over thermoset processing.
Keywords – Thermoset, Thermoplastic, mechanical properties, crosslinking agents I. Introduction
Thermosets are commodity as well as engineering plastics. They account for more than 70% of the total plastics market share. Though they are easily processable and available at relatively low cost, they involve cross linking process (curing) so as to become suitable for the application. There are certain disadvantages associated with processing of thermoset category of plastics like high amount of flashes, mold material abrasion at relatively faster rate as compared to thermoplastics material,

Physical cross linking ( High energy radiation)
B. Chemical cross linking
C. Cross linking by SILANE
Amongst above 3, physical cross linking is discussed in detail below.
In this method, cross linking is obtained by free radical mechanism. The free radical is generated in a polymer chain by using high energy radiations. The free radical is formed by breaking C-H bond and formation of C-C bond amongst the monomers. Schematic of this can be represented as in fig.1 It is known that bond energy for cleavage of C-H bond is 364kJ/mol. The electron beam having energy sufficient to break C-H bond is suitable for cross linking. linking. Cross linking of polymers by radiation technology involve four main variables.
1. Type of radiation and its source
2. Nature of polymer structure to be irradiated
3. Mechanism and theories of reaction
4. Physical, chemical and mechanical properties of network
Plastics are light and convenient handling, achieving widespread customer acceptance. In general, plastic packing growths fast and posts significant threats of substitution to cans
In Figure 4, Young's modulus is plotted against yield strength. The diagonal line in the figure represents the material index M= σy/E. Materials below the diagonal line are the best candidate materials because they will remain elastic while providing the maximum conformability. All materials that cost more than $2.20 per pound and have a UV rating of "poor" were eliminated. Also, only materials that can be made through the polymer extrusion process were considered. The candidate materials are listed in Table 1 and ranked by the material index. The current material, TPV, is included in the table for
Three polymers with industrial applications were produced. Ethylene glycol and glycerol both produced polyesters with thermoplastic properties. These plastics are soft and malleable when heated, but solidify once removed from heat. Thermosetting plastics were obtained from a reaction with phthalic anhydride rather than with a carboxylic acid because it is more reactive. The reaction between phthalic anhydride and ethylene glycol produced the linear polyester. Correspondingly, the reaction between phthalic anhydride and glycerol produced a cross-linked polyester with a more rigid three-dimensional structure. Linear polyesters are characterized by each component of the reaction having only two functional groups. Cross-linked polyesters form a rigid three-dimensional structure due to more than two functional groups present in one of the monomers. As a result, the linear polymer chain becomes cross-linked to another polymer chain. Both required the removal of water in order to shift the reaction toward the desired product. Additionally,
8. Thermoregulation is keeping the temperature of an object in this case the human body stable or in a controlled temperature.
If you had the opportunity to live forever, would you take it? The obstacles to keeping your body alive indefinitely still seem insurmountable, but some scientists think there is another possibility opened up by digital technology: creating a digital copy of your "self" and keeping that "alive" online long after your physical body has ceased to function.
Thermoregulation is the control of the body’s temperature. Normal body core temperature is typically around 37 °C, staying within a functional range of 35 to 41 °C. (Périard et al., 2015) Temperature during exercise can have both positive and negative effects and therefore it is important to manage it through training and heat acclimatisation. It has been found that power output and speed of cyclists decreased during hot conditions. (Racinais, S et al., 2015) However, due to heat acclimatisation the decrements were progressively increased, therefore suggesting that heat acclimatisation can be used successfully. (Périard et al., 2015). Similarly, it can be found that exercise increases body temperature and the resulting heat stored becomes a factor inhibiting exercise performance. Loss of heat by evaporation can eventually hinder performance. Therefore, it is again found that acclimatization improves performance by affecting heat loss mechanisms. (Reilly et al, 2006). A study was carried out by Webborn et al., (2005) to test weather precooling/cooling in intermittent sprint exercises in a hot environment would reduce a rise in core temperature. 8 male participants took part in 4 heat stress trials with the independent variables being no-cooling control, 20 min of precooling and cooling during exercise. Each participant took a pill measuring core body temperature and the results found that during 80 minutes of passive rest in heated conditions, body temperature rose from
The general manager of the German plant, Hans Thorborg has been considering the introduction of plastic rings as a substitute for the steel rings. His idea comes from one of his competitor,
Thermo is a way to explain that the water is warmer than other areas of the ocean. Haline is a way to describe the salt content. The ocean is essentially made up of water and salt. So the density of the ocean depends on the temperature and the salinity which is thermohaline which is used to explain the change in flow of water in the ocean, that has been changed by
A lot of people question why us humans yawn, hiccup, and snore. Have you ever wondered why our body does these things? We question why we yawn when we see other people yawn. We question why our children snore because it’s normally typical to see men snore. There are medical reasons for these actions. All reasons are still being hiccuped, many scientist think different reasons. I’m going to tell you the most popular reasons.
The control of body temperature –thermoregulation. This is an example of the nervous and endocrine systems working together.
Jain Piping Division is the largest producer of Thermoplastic piping systems for all conceivable applications with pipes ranging from 3 mm to 1600 mm in diameter.
The new plant used plastics extrusion to produce high-density polyethylene (PE) pipes primarily for the natural gas and oil industries. Lightweight, noncorrosive, chemically inert, and available in long runs, plastic pipe was the preferred method of distributing natural gas and oil in many parts of the world. PE pipe was easy to handle: a 500-ft length of 1-inch pipe weighed approximately 100 pounds. To create extruded plastic pipe, raw thermoplastic beads (or resin) were loaded in a hopper and mixed with additives such as colorants and IV inhibitors. The hopper fed a highly automated extrusion manufacturing line composed of an extruder for melting and mixing the raw materials, a die that determined the ultimate shape and diameter of the pipe, a vacuum tank for sizing and cooling, and cooling tanks. At the end of the extrusion line, the pipe was moved to a finishing line where identification marks were added. Stacked lengths and spools of pipe were moved to an inspection area, where the outer diameter, pipe thickness, and other quality parameters were confirmed. Finally, the pipes were packaged and prepared for shipment to customers. Workers also performed quality inspections on raw materials. The plant established its own procedures for testing incoming resin based on melt index, density, tensile
This study describes the effects of poplar and radiata pine were treated with a cross-linking reaction of sucrose and 1,3-dimethylol-4-5-dihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDHEU) on mechanical properties, surface free energy and bonding strength. Although strength loss observed after treatment with sucrose and DMDHEU, especially tensile strength, shear strength parallel to grain and cleavage strength, but modulus of elasticity was significantly increased, poplar and radiata pine increased up to 51% and 84%. The modulus of rupture of treated radiata pine increased of 17%, however treated poplar was reduced 46%. That indicated the hardness and rigidity of modified wood was significantly improved. Whether tangential sections, radial sections or cross sections
In this lab, we are requiring to observe the effect of injection molding process variables to the tensile strength of Polypropylene (PP). As the outcome of this change, the specimen will be measure as to determine its change of properties based on different variables. The process variables that will be changes is injection pressure, and the material that be used as the specimen is PP. The scope of this study is focusing on the simulation of tensile strength on the raw materials including determination of the effective parameters that contribute to the response.
Additives, fillers, and reinforcements are used to change and enhance the physical and mechanical properties of plastics. In general, reinforcing fibers increase the mechanical properties of polymer composites while particular fillers of various types increase
