Studying abroad, to me, signifies personal growth in areas of my life. Being from a military/government home, moves were about growing inwardly. They meant that once settled it was back to the beginning and learning to adapt to the culture surrounding me. An example of this was coming to Brazil. I was separated by a language barrier, I was an American, and I was young. In the six and a half years living in Sao Paulo, I learned Portuguese, and became a Brazilian through the assimilation of culture, customs, and ways of thinking.
