How Adversity Affects People Studies show that people who have experienced adversity are more likely to handle bad situations better than those who haven’t. An adverse situation could be losing a loved one, having family problems, or getting injured. All of these things can put a pause on your life and sometimes it’s hard to recover and go back to “normal,” but it is possible to bounce back better than before. People can overcome adversity by going against what’s normal, getting help from the community, and not letting situations affect them for long periods of time. In adverse situations, there is not always one way to handle something, many people find their own method that works best for them. For example, in an article called How Rural …show more content…
This town didn’t suck you down the way it did some of us.” During her return to Clinton, she learned that the girls her age who were influenced by older boys didn’t have good lives and that her mom was really trying to protect her future. Potts was able to have a good life as an adult because her mom pushed all of the bad parts of their community away. In Communities Push Back, Lorraine Cochran-Johnson raises awareness about the amount of dollar stores in a neighborhood with lower income and residents of color, compared to a mostly white neighborhood. Cochran-Johnson found that if you were to map out all of the dollar stores in her county, many of them would overlap in lower-income areas, while there would only be two or three in higher-income areas. “I am not against the existence of dollar stores – I am a dollar store shopper,” says Cochran-Johnson. “I am against the proliferation of dollar stores in our communities because there is a direct correlation between their presence and food deserts.” Cochran-Johnson doesn’t want to get rid of the stores, she just wants her community to have better and different food options …show more content…
Besides all of the pain she was feeling, Ree still wanted to make sure her siblings and her mother were being looked after. Having support is one way to get through a difficult situation, however, some people with the right personality can find a successful way to handle problems. How Resilience Works by Diane Coutu talks about different scenarios of big and small hardships and how someone was able to overcome them. In one of the small stories she tells, she talks about someone named Claus Schmidt who lost three children, yet at work he made people laugh and wrote amazing articles. “Despite all this – or maybe because of it – he milled around the newsroom day after day, mentoring the cub reporters, talking about the novels he was writing – always looking forward to what the future held for him.” He was able to get through the pain of losing his daughters and to continue being a wonderful writer and mentor other people to get better at writing. Schmidt is resilient because after dealing with his hardship, he was able to teach and inspire others to continue
It really comes down to what type of person you are. Some people don’t handle adversity very well they don’t have the grit or right character traits to help them overcome adversity. Others use their grit and character traits to grind through their struggles and trials in life. “Make dealing with your adversity a project. Set yourself a goal, or goals, and take decisive action on a regular basis. Don’t dwell on the past but focus on the future and allow that to pull you through”(Mindfood). Part of grit is to keep going when the problems being faced get worse. Setting goals will urge life to go on and ultimately help the adversity seem less than it actually is. Character traits that can help include flexibility, assertiveness, optimism, courage, and many more. For example, flexibility or being able to adapt helps overcome adversity for sure, because adversity can happen at anytime. Being flexible would help in scenario because you might have to go with whatever happens. Optimism is another salubrious option for overcoming adversity. Always having a positive outlook on what happens if essential. Viewing every problem as an opportunity to learn something new about yourself or in general. Nick Vujicic talked about optimism helping him overcome the struggles of having no limbs. He shed light on this by saying “I may have absolutely no control over what happens to us, but we can control how we respond. If we choose the
Everyday, we go through situations and experiences that affect us in someway, perhaps even change us. Different situations have different effects. The more difficult the situation is, the more of an effect it has on us. Those hard times can be called adversity. How do we, as humans, react to adversity? What are the possible effects it may have?
In Chariandy’s (2017) book Brother, the protagonist Michael tells a riveting story of the hardships his friends and family have faced growing up in Scarborough, Ontario. As the story progresses one learns that Michael shows a great deal of resiliency as he continuously faces adversity throughout his life. Michael overcomes many risks as he grows up, and faces many unresolved risks as the story comes to an end. Through comparisons made to Masten (2014) and Maynard’s (2017) books, along with class discussions and infographics, these risks will become increasingly clear. In addition to these risks, it will become clear what interventions were missing and what could have helped to increase the resiliency of Michael, and decreased the amount of
Adversity inevitably changes us in aspects of motivation, contentment, and character. It generally leads to disheartenment, and depending on the magnitude; we can either be completely emotionally or physically devastated, or it could be a minor jerk in the path of life. I personally believe its possible for adversity to be provocative in a way because depending on how you take it, it can be encouraging and result in increased determination to try to do better next time. It can be heartbreaking too however, and this is exemplified through Fusi Bergman - the 70 year old dynamic protagonist of ''God is Not a Fish Inspector'' - who is shattered by the adversity of losing the one thing in his life that gives
Adversity comes in all forms in our life. We find it at work, at school, and in other social communities. However I am more concerned with the adversities we face on a larger scale. Almost every year we are faced with some sort of natural disasters throughout the world such as floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, fire, and more. They all come and leave many dead, wounded (physically and mentally), and homeless. Many natural disasters like hurricane Katrina has left many people in hardships even so long after the incident. Another form of adversity and suffering that is common is the choice of others. For example, many children who were born after the incident of hurricane Katrina suffered the consequences as well. Many kids whose parents are incarcerate or dead have to suffer sometimes being placed in a bad foster home and become subject to
Throughout life, everyone faces challenges, hard times, bad luck, and adversity. However, the way you respond to advice shows who you are as a person. Some take adversity better then others however, overall adversity makes people think about themselves, morphically go through the process of rebuilding and making something better then before. As seen by Horace's quote, the response to adversity unlocks abilities that some do not think they have, making people change for the better. I see this in my own experience, as me starting with an F in math made me work harder to bring it up, along with in others such as Kanye West and the making of his hit song "Through the Wire" or Ray Lewis and his response to an abusive father.
Roman Poet, Horace’s quote says, “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” I agree with his stand on adversity because though it may seem bad, it can lead to finding your true self. If one was not put under enough duress. Then they wouldn't find out what type of person that are now will they find out how they will react to certain things. Having your character developed even more so may potentially lead to a brighter future, because then you may qualify for a position somewhere you want to be.
Adversity is something that everyone faces at some point in their life. How you choose to face it can show you who you are, and help you grow as a person. The type of adversity I have faced involved school and sports. During my freshman year of high school, I played Junior Varsity Soccer and performed well in school at the same time. I had no problems with anything.
“Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?” People respond to adversity in many different ways. Adversity is difficulties; misfortune. Adversity hits at unexpected times, as well as times that you expect it. It's the way you respond to adversity when it strikes. I have had many experiences with being a carrot, an egg, and a coffee bean.
Adversity is something that many people are able to over come, most people can by themselves, others it requires a lot of help and if they work together and set aside petty fears it will be overcome. When they come out to the other side they will be stronger that before both mentally and/or
Throughout your life you will find different situations dealing with adversity. When these situations pop up, you have to learn to stay strong and make the best of each situation. In the long run life is too short to be the carrot or the egg. You need to embrace the adversity with your head up and while staying strong. Are you strong while dealing with difficult
In life, there will always be obstacles along the way and sometimes they can and will break us down, mentally and physically. Negative events are inevitable, but how we decide to deal with them, determines who we are. Since I was a child, I was told to face my fears, and not run away from them, fearing what they might bring. In a way, those same ideologies would take part in my adult life, I began to use those same resiliency skills in order to become a better person, both in school and in life. By becoming exposed to certain concepts like the ATC model and the RTR techniques, I can say that I have overcame certain bumps along the road and how I transcended from those certain moments in my life to becoming somewhere closer to the person someday I hope to be.
Adversity can be a very ruinous situation to both an individual and anyone else around them. This can become a serious situation if not instructed by a professional. Growing up with has become a new norm to many individuals especially including my older cousin Angela who lost her brother to gun violence. It was during her adolescent years where she had to live with the adjustment of her new reality to adversity.
Adversity, as defined by the Cambridge English dictionary is, “a difficult or unlucky situation or event.” ( Cambridge Academic Content Dictionary, 2017) Lou Holtz stated, “People who succeed are people who, when they get knocked down by some adversity, get up; whereas, people who fail are people who, when they get knocked down, stay down.” (Landis, 2013, p. 16) In Dr. Landis work he also maintains a similar view. He lists four things you must do in order to overcome adversity
What do you think of when you think of adversity? Do you view it as a negative aspect of your life or a learning lesson? I believe there is a lot of confusion when it comes to adversity. There are times when we want to fall to our knees because we feel so helpless to the situations taken place. In other times we feel the need to fight back and want more out of what has taken place. Everyone is different and there is no right or wrong way to handle the obstacles that this crazy life throws at us.
