There comes a time in everyone's life that one finds them self having to take on challenges that seem impossible. If one feels that these challenges are unfair is besides the point, it is how one takes on these challenges that exhibit true character of strength. A true testament to one’s own self, whether facing death, cruelty, or even being accused and incarcerated for the murder of one's wife; how one approaches this is crucial. This is exactly what the movie Shawshank Redemption portrays; a man faced with adversity, serving time for a crime that he did not commit. Shawshank Redemption a compelling, sentimental film is enhanced due to its tenacious protagonist and eloquent theme. Andy Dupree exemplifies a strong protagonist in the movie and proves he is a determined individual. After one month of being there Andy held his …show more content…
He becomes intrigued with the prison library and shows a true moment of determination when he continuously petitions for more books. As he is rejected time and time again he does not give up. Week after week he sends letters to the state, no matter how many times they reject him. Most would have thrown in the towel and moved onto some other distraction, however Andy did not. To the surprise of those around him he is victorious in his plea and the library’s stock is enhanced. Whether he is campaigning for more books in the library or fighting for his own life, Andy Dupree is someone who does not throw in the towel, he is resilient. This leads up to the moment of Andy’s ultimate determination; his escape. For years he carefully and patiently tunneled his way through the prison to his monumental escape. Many people would never take the vast amount of time and effort that Andy took to plan this escape, and in the final stretch of it he maneuvered himself through sewage, something very few would ever do; a true moment of his role as a tenacious
Before Andy was sent to Shawshank he hid a key under a rock that opened a safety deposit box which contained a new identity. Andy shows tremendous amounts of hope throughout the story that the rock and key would still be where he left it. His hope in finding this key lead him to fantasize and hope of a new life he could create when he escapes. Andy longs for this new life that he could create for himself and Red in Zihuatanejo, Mexico. These are both strong examples of where Andy Dufesne expresses his hope but the best example is that if Andy truly had no hope, he would have never escaped. Hope is the only thing that kept Andy Dufesne going even through the most difficult
Andy’s determination and drive provided him with numerous opportunities to achieve normalcy, have hope, and later, attain freedom. During
In the movie Andy did not speak of this at all, he was incarcerated and later figured how to get money for his escape. This is a fundamental significant difference, which sets the story and movie in two different directions, but not too far apart. I believe it was changed up in the movie to make it more interesting or more in the moment. The book suggests that Andy had a life in plan once he was released or indeed he did plan on escaping. After all, this shows how Andy planned his life and future outside of
In this film the character Andy Dufresne goes into prison and gets broken down and has his ambitions brutally beaten out of him, but when he hits rock bottom he finally starts to regain his resilience and his hope. This idea of hope and resilience was showed throughout the film and it shows us that being resilient and holding onto your hope is a vital part of day to day prison life. An example of hope and resilience being showed in the film is when Andy asks Red for a stone hammer, Red tells him that it would take a man six hundred years to tunnel a hole through those walls, but when Andy tries to carve his name into the wall he realises that the walls are made of a weak stone. When Andy escapes from Shawshank,
First of all, Andy faces all the brutal hardships by being composed and self possessed. Andy is a even- tempered person and he handles every situation with solicitude. When, during his trail, “ Andy [takes] the stand in his own defense and tells his story calmly, coolly and dispassionately”. This unemotional response further makes the society think Andy is arrogant but, he actually tries to think ahead and solve his problems. Furthermore, after coming to jail Andy faces many problems and yet he stays strong mentally. Even during the times “his lower lip was swelled up so big that it looked like a summer sausage”, he endured the pain and tried to hope for the best. In other words, Andy’s unique characteristics makes him different from the rest
In result, Andy begins to feel a sense of betrayed and finalizes the plans of his escape. Having developed said plan for many years, that night Andy escapes through a man made whole in his cell which was covered by the poster he purchased from Red. With the escape going according to plan, he flees to Mexico and becomes untraceable due to a new identity.
I was destined to be an educator from the age of 14 when I first started teaching first grade Sunday School. Two years later I began teaching an after school Astronomy program offered through the school district to third and sixth grades. This lead to a volunteer position in a fifth grade classroom assisting students with reading. Before I went to college, I became a pre-school teacher. Twenty years later, I am seeking a new challenge, which has led me to apply for the Early Childhood Education and Development Instructor position with Metropolitan Community College.
Andy Dufresne is knowing he is innocent of his crime and is determined to be free and live his dreams. At Shawshank State Prison, it may seem like the inmates are controlled and unable to do anything. However, Andy and the other inmates took every opportunity to make themselves feel freer. Although Andy is convicted sentenced to life in prison his self-determinism for extrinsic and intrinsic motivations are clear throughout the film. The experiences that Shawshank brings does not hinder the self-determinism that he shows. It’s always a possibility that someone could escape a prison yet no one thinks it can happen. The maximum-security prison in the film The Shawshank Redemption is no joke however through determination Andy Dufresne can accomplish it. Upon arrival to the prison Andy had to adapt to direction that his life was heading. Even though he knows of his innocence he is incapable of just walking out and has to deal with the nuisances in his way. The characters feel like freedom is something that they always look forward to, but near the end when Brooks and Red are paroled they soon realize the changes around them and can’t adapt. Nevertheless, Frank Darabont does an exceptional job of showing the emotions that the charters had to go through in this prison escape film. It seems as though the point he is trying to get
Adversity is an inevitable component of human’s lives. Without it, individuals would glide through their existences without any mishappenings along the way and life would be nearly perfect. While this situation seems ideal, it is unrealistic and actually detrimental to personal development. The obstacles people face play a key role in shaping who they become. Without difficulties, individuals will not be exposed to real, purposeful problem solving skills. They will not receive the opportunity to face adversity head on and potentially come out victorious, all while learning a lesson and improving themselves along the way. If people become apathetic to their troubles, they are actually admitting a defeat. They will not get the chance to experience the satisfaction that is a result of besting misfortunes. In order to do this, individuals must use the pressure that these troubling times cause to their advantage by holding onto hope and the value of life. In The Shawshank Redemption, the text creator develops the idea that anyone can overcome the most terrible of situations if they remain patient, optimistic and logical. When Andy Dufresne is imprisoned as a result of false accusations, he uses his fortitude to inspire hope within other prisoners and eventually escape the harsh confinement. On the other hand, Red is transformed from a spiteful convict to an optimistic man upon meeting Andy. When individuals are placed under immense pressure over a long period of time, then they
Directed by Frank Darabont, The Shawshank Redemption tells the Story of Andy Dufrane, a man who has been wrongly convicted of murder and must endure life inside the harsh and corrupt Shawshank prison, but despite this he never loses hope of finding freedom. Hope is an important inspiring idea in this film, as it is what sustains him during the long and difficult years within the prison, and it is the result of this enduring hope that Andy finally finds freedom. There are many visual and oral techniques used throughout the film to portray the idea of hope. This includes the hope that Andy holds, and
Holding onto one’s humanity is a skill that takes constant practice and the conscious decision to do so. The protagonist of the film, Andy, is very different from the rest on his inmates at Shawshank in that he manages to hold onto his humanity throughout his time in prison despite many trying situations. This trait is first expressed when Andy asks if anyone knows the name of man who was beaten to death by the guards on his first night in prison. By simply having some human emotion Andy has proven that he is not willing to let prison change who he is as a human being. Again, Andy leaps out of his comfort zone during his confrontation with the guard on the roof. Perched on the edge of the roof, Andy spreads his wings and risks the fall in order to grant his inmates a taste of the outside world through the simple luxury of a few beers for his friends to enjoy. The great beauty of a man who not only has the courage to hold onto his own humanity but also has the boldness to help others do the same is what makes Andy such a captivating protagonist. His courage and determination are the only thing keeping him human and moreso, keeping him sane.
Transformational leadership theory creates a positive change in their followers. This type of leadership takes care of the organizational interests and acts in the welfares for overall group as a whole. With this type of leadership, the leader increases the motivation, self-esteem and performance with their team (Kovjanic et al., 2012). Transformational leadership theory exceeds transactional leadership and rather than explaining a set of particular behaviors; it charts a continuing process by which "leaders and followers raise one another to higher levels of morality and motivation" (Antonakis & House, 2014). Transformational leadership theory is based on leadership with morals and significance, and a purpose that exceeds short-term objectives
They employ the abilities of the main character to get out of difficult situations with taxes. This means that while being in prison, Andy Dufresne is forced to use experience to trick the federal tax system. In other words, a criminal, after being accused of committing a crime, is continuously forced to commit another crime. While prison is supposed to make people think about the wrong they have done, the prison in the movie forces a person to walk the path of a criminal much further than one wants to.
A man by the name of Andy Dufresne was convicted of murdering his wife and her lover and was sentenced to two consecutive life terms in Shawshank prison. He was an obvious black sheep among the prisoners, but as time went on he grew relationships with the crooks and realized the injustice in the justice system. In the creation of friendship between Red and Andy, hope was spread throughout the prison. While many themes are present in the film The Shawshank Redemption, hope, friendship, and injustice are also relevant in the world today.
His skills helped him gain the trust and popularity from both Mr. Warden and his inmates. He is calm and cool in behavior that made him likable. He is loyal as he made sure he kept the promise he made to his friend Red. Andy has high external as he is educated and had a high position in a bank. On the other hand, Red has been in prison for his entire adult life which resulted in a change of personal system. He doesn’t think of life after prison. He has been “institutionalized “. He has become dependent on the required system that he doesn’t think he can survive after prison. The word institutionalized as described by Red is the process by which prisoners first hate the prison then gets used to it that finally, even their lives depend on it. (Movie). Red is also the guy that can get you anything. He sells “cigarettes, a bag of resources and a bottle of brandy” which resulted in high power and respect from his inmates. He values the life he has in prison than anything else. I believe this is because it has been a long time since he was out to see the world. He has already adjusted his behavior and way of life in regards to the required system of the prison. The rest of the prisoner’s personal system lies between these two.
