Advertising, generally speaking, is the promotion of goods, services, companies and ideas, usually performed by an identified sponsor. Marketers see advertising as part of an overall promotional strategy. Other components of the promotional mix include publicity, public relations, personal selling, and sales promotion.

It wasn=t long before the Aspectacular@ was born. Spectaculars are bright, lighted billboards made of many bulbs (the slogan or logo is often spelled out in light) which often contains some three-dimensional elements. The first spectaculars debuted at the end of the 19th century, along with the first lighted marquees. At the end of the 20th century, spectaculars have become even more important, becoming landmarks in places like New York City and Las Vegas. However, outside of the landmark status of some spectaculars, outdoor advertising is very limited.
The largest differences between the advertising of the 1890s and the 1990s are the sheer number of media available and what can be called the culture of Acool.@ The 1990s has radio, television, ads before motion pictures and videotapes, Internet advertising of various types (email Aspam@ banner ads), direct mail advertising, blimps and cropdusters to add to the arsenal of outdoor advertisement and concentrated target marketing. More important than the available media is the net effect of advertising. Advertising is now totalizing, both the dominant culture and counterculture are appealed to. Instead of simply announcing the existence of a product, advertising works to create a culture of consumption for everyone. Advertising's images of consumption evolved from phony promises of a better life for white, nuclear families to the hip-based brand of product cool that still exists today. (Frank, 1997).
In other words, advertising is a form of communication as well as a marketing function where the advertiser pays for the use of the communications media. It is non-personal (compared to personal selling) and has to be persuasive and convincing in order to sell or secure favorable consideration. The advertiser has to communicate facts and ideas to the public in such a way that the information fits the needs, wants, and interests of the public (Crisostomo 4).
In today’s society there are a plethora of ideas about advertisement. What would it take to meet societies want’s with the increase in advertising of new technology? In regards to four articles: “What’s Changed” by , Jane Hammerslough, “Urban Warfare” by, Kate MacArthur & Hilary Chura, “The Age of Reason” by, Kenneth Hein, “The Buzz on Buzz” by, Renee Dye. These four authors describe the many different angles that can be approached by advertisement. They have also shown some great aspects of the new uprising development of advertising technology in modern American society.
Advertisements are very successful and can have a big impact on the culture of people and the way people live their lives. For example, one of the biggest advertisements changed one big important do a lot of people end up doing, marriage. Around 1956, and so on, the De Beers diamond corporation advertised the engagement ring, as a sign of love and togetherness. This went on for so long, that people have started to believe in this and it was adopted to people's idea of marriage. In these days, you can rarely see anyone getting married without a diamond ring, and even if they don’t have one, they plan on getting one once they gain enough money.
The roaring twenties was a time of great prosperity and rapid change, as well as a celebration of new technologies. These changes have had a significant impact in transforming the United States into a consumerist society. The philosophies and foundations of advertising strategies created in the 1920s can still be found on occasion in today’s contemporary advertisements and sometimes can work in tandem to strengthen their sales pitch. The 1920s were a time of booming domestic consumerism to the extent that “even products rarely purchased as separate units began to seek a place in consumer conscience” (Marchand, 5). Marchand goes on to say that as result of the changes in marketing strategies, advertising expenditures “rose from 8 percent in 1914 to 14 percent in 1929” (6). Marchand states that advertising is such a crucial part of our life, that one of the first statements he makes in his book is that through advertisements a “...picture of our time (day-by-day) is recorded completely and vividly” (xv). Two popular advertising strategies that came out of the twenties were the Democracy of Goods and the parable of First Impression, both of which tended to work with one another when marketing goods targeted for middle class consumers. Whether people buy a product because of an advertisement or simply because of the brand, product sales have gone up ever since the firsts ads were seen around the 1920’s. While ads constantly use the same tactics to influence people, the tactics change based on the evolving society. For example, the 7 Up company have advertised their drinks since the 1930’s, but over time they have developed and adapted to the changing society.
Advertisements are basically pictures that give the viewer a distinct feeling and idea of what the product will bring them. The people creating these advertisements takes many things into consideration in the picture aspect such as the color theme if that is possible, placement of the models, what the models are wearing, and the background if there is any.
