Gene Kranz once stated, “Failure is not an option.” Kranz is a retired NASA flight director. He stated those words after a disaster occurred during Apollo 13’s mission to the Moon. I’ve always been interested in space travel. It has been one thing I have dreamed of ever since I was a young child. The chances of anyone going into space are very infinitesimal, but I still have a passion to go. I want to study aerospace engineering. Getting off the earth into space was the biggest challenge during the Cold War in the 1960s. With such limited technology, it was near impossible to fire a rocket off the earth, land on the moon, and return with the crew alive. Nearly fifty years ago, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took the first steps for mankind on the moon. As technology gets better and better, the next “...giant leap for mankind…” will be on Mars. As an aspiring engineer, I am fascinated by this. Many astronauts have been aerospace engineers. However, most of the astronauts have been in some form of military. Aerospace Engineering is a very specific field and many colleges do not offer it. I want to earn my masters degree because it will provide many more opportunities in the future. WPI has a student body with 60% enrolled in an engineering major. This is the type of environment that I want to work in. As a graduate of WPI, I want to work anywhere that I know I will be happy. To me, my salary is not as important as the fact that I am making a difference in the world. Safety is paramount in any mission on earth. Guaranteeing the safety of someone is something we as a society hold very close. Being a so-called “Rocket Scientist” brings lots of responsibility on me. I have the skills and discipline to be a successful engineering and with your generous contribution, I will be able to achieve my goals of attending the Worcester Polytechnic
